Strategic Minerals Plc (AIM: SML), the magnetite focused iron ore producer and exploration company, is delighted to announce that it has entered into a commercial contract (“Contract”) with a subsidiary of Glencore International PLC (LSE:GLEN), for the sale of iron ore concentrate from its Cobre Project in New Mexico, to Glencore AG.

Under the terms of the Contract, the total quantity of magnetite to be made available to Glencore from Strategic’s Cobre Project is 800,000 wet metric tonnes (“WMTs”). Initial deliveries of up to 60,000WMTs under the Contract are scheduled to start from April, subject to the relevant standard freighting and performance related documentation being in place.

The start date coincides with the expected completion of the Cobre rail-spur upgrade this month. The rail-spur will allow the contracted magnetite to be transported by train to the Port of Guaymas in Mexico where it will be unloaded for shipping.

The global headquarters campus of Novus International, Inc. is one of the first pilot projects to be certified by the Sustainable Sites Initiative(TM) (SITES(TM)) for its sustainable site design, construction and maintenance. The Novus campus, lead by landscape architects SWT Design, was awarded a 3-star rating by SITES, making it the highest rated landscape project in the world.

SITES is an interdisciplinary effort led by the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at The University of Texas at Austin and the United States Botanic Garden to create voluntary national guidelines and benchmarks for sustainable land design, construction and maintenance practices. Certification for the pilot rating system is based on The Sustainable Sites Initiative: Guidelines and Benchmarks 2009.

In May 2010, Novus’s campus was one of more than 150 national and international projects to be chosen by the SITES partners to test out the 4-star rating system and guidelines.

The U.S. Green Building Council, a stakeholder in the Sustainable Sites Initiative, anticipates incorporating the SITES guidelines and performance benchmarks into future iterations of its LEED Green Building Rating System(TM). While LEED minimizes the carbon footprint, SITES demonstrates how a landscape can actually sequester carbon and regenerate living systems. Working together, these initiatives will further revolutionize sustainable design.

The SITES Rating System includes 15 prerequisites and 51 different credits, measuring performance in areas such as the initial site selection, water, soil, vegetation, materials, human health and well being, construction and maintenance – adding up to a 250 point scale. The new generation of VELUX roof windows sets new standards for energy efficiency and comfort in roof windows

The VELUX Group – the global leader in roof windows and skylights – is launching a new generation of roof windows that take energy efficiency, daylight, and comfort to new and higher levels.

“We have been working intensively during the past years to develop the new generation of VELUX roof windows. It sets new standards to the benefit of millions of people who enjoy daylight and fresh air though the roof from VELUX windows. The new generation combines outstanding insulation properties with significantly improved benefits from passive solar gain and thereby reaches excellent energy efficiency levels,” says Group CEO Jørgen Tang-Jensen of VELUX A/S. Improved energy efficiency and better indoor climate
Throughout the development process, the quest was to find the right construction principles to ensure optimised energy efficiency while enhancing the high quality and proven construction principles that have always been a hallmark of VELUX roof windows. With the introduction of VELUX Thermo Technology, the new VELUX generation has improved insulation properties with a u-value down to 1,2 for standard roof windows. Combined with a larger pane area, which not only admits up to 18 percent more daylight but also more passive solar heat gain into our homes, the new roof windows raise optimised energy balance and energy efficiency to new and excellent levels.

“The pane area has been increased for two reasons. First, we wanted to improve the energy efficiency of the new roof window, which is not only better insulated but also benefits from more passive solar gain in cold periods – the net result being outstanding energy balance and energy performance. Fresh air is equally important for a good indoor climate and with the new generation of VELUX roof windows, ventilation is still possible even when the window is closed thanks to the unique ventilation flap, which has long been a well-known VELUX hallmark. This ensures a unique supply and control of fresh air, which means a better indoor climate.

Energy Balance
Energy balance is a specific value consisting of a number of variables for each roof window and pane variant. Energy balance is a method of evaluating the energy efficiency of a window. It is the balance between the solar energy that enters through the window and the heat loss that escapes through the window. If the level of solar gain is higher than the heat loss, the energy balance of the window is positive.

Summer season
During the cooling season, energy balance should be as close to zero as possible, reducing the risk of overheating and avoiding the use of fossil energy for cooling. Roof windows with higher sun screening will continue to prevent overheating in the summer; additional heat protection can be provided by decoration and sun protection products and roller shutters.

Winter season
In the heating season, the energy balance should be greater than zero and as high as possible to reduce energy loss and optimise gains from passive solar energy. The RKW Group has started production at its first plant in Egypt. The company built a totally new manufacturing facility in Cairo in less than 16 months. The new plant, RKW Egypt, will be officially inaugurated on November 10, 2011 in the presence of the shareholder families, a major customer, machine suppliers, Egyptian government representatives and the RKW Board of Management.

RKW has invested more than US$ 30 million in a manufacturing building, warehouse and administrative offices on 20,000 square meters of land in the “City of 6th October”. The industrial park in which our new plant is located is 35 kilometers southwest of Cairo and only a few kilometers from the pyramids of Giza.

German Know-how for Local Specialists

At the beginning, the plant will employ about 40 people. As part of the 1st stage, the manufacturing facility includes a state-of-the-art embossing calender and an extrusion line. At the moment, German specialists are training local workers and preparing the start of series production.

“We are delighted to have designed a new gateway for Winnipeg,” said Fred Clarke, FAIA, Senior Principal of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. “This building not only captures the city’s distinctive landscape, but also makes flying enjoyable for passengers.”

The building is long and low with a floating silver roof. Skylights, an atrium, and windows fill the terminal with light and bring the big sky inside. Passengers can see through the building, across the prairie and to downtown Winnipeg. These views create a strong sense of place, while views of the airfield make it easy for passengers to find their planes. Glass boarding bridges also help to orient passengers, giving them an immediate glimpse into the terminal upon arrival. Inside, billowing wood ceilings and wood-paneled walls create a warm inviting environment.

As 120,000 LEDs built into its curving glass-and-metal exterior wall sparkled, the 43-story tower lit up the sky. The CEO of the Panama Canal, Administrator/CEO Alberto Aleman Zubieta, announced today that the Panama Canal Authority will host its first-ever best practices Engineering and Infrastructure Congress. Convening this Congress is an effort to share best practices and detailed, practical, hands-on experience related to managing a significant infrastructure project. Occurring April 18-20, 2012 in Panama City, Panama, the congress will convene world-renowned experts in the fields of geotechnical, electrical, structural and civil engineering. In addition, it will showcase infrastructure projects from around the world and update attendees on the progress of the Canal Expansion Program.

The Panama Canal 2012 International Engineering and Infrastructure Congress will provide updated information on all of the elements of expansion, including the financing of the program. Three tracks comprised of engineering best practices, world infrastructure projects and future engineering trends will round out the agenda for the first two days. On April 20, the ACP will invite participants to visit the Canal expansion sites and see the work firsthand.

In addition to the opportunities presented by Panama Canal representatives, Panamanian government officials will provide information on projects in Panama including the Biodiversity Museum designed by Frank Gehry, the local subway (Metro de Panama) and the coastal road (Cinta Costera).

At the international level, engineers will speak about lock design experience, planning prerequisites for successful projects and the latest design technology.

A new report out today by Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics predicts growth in global construction will outpace world GDP growth over the next decade.

“Construction has never seen such rapid growth above GDP, fuelled by the emerging super powers of China and India and a rebound in US construction”, says Graham Robinson, Director, Global Construction Perspectives, an author of the report.

The Global Construction 2020 report, a major global study into construction, sponsored by global advisory firm PwC, predicts that global construction will grow by 67% from $7.2 trillion today to $12 trillion by 2020.
The report says a total of $97.7 trillion will be spent on construction globally over the next ten years.

Growth in China, India and the US will account for over half of the predicted $4.8 trillion increase in global construction to 2020.

China and India will drive growth in emerging markets as rising populations, rapid urbanisation and strong economic growth are key drivers for construction.

China, boosted by stimulus spending, overtook the US in 2010 to become the world’s largest construction market.

China’s construction market will more than double in size over the decade to $2.5 trillion by 2020, or 21% of world construction.

“Construction will become one of the exciting global growth industries of the next decade driven by emerging markets and the US rebound” says Dr Neil Blake, Director of Economic Analysis at Oxford Economics.

The report predicts that India will overtake Japan to become the world’s third largest construction market by 2018.

The US will register a sharp cyclical rebound in construction with short term double digit growth in both residential and non residential building sectors.

Seven countries – China, US, India, Indonesia, Canada, Australia and Russia account for two thirds of growth in global construction to 2020.

Firm selected from international pool for Hancher Auditorium

The University of Iowa has chosen Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects (http://www.pcparch.com) to design the new Hancher Auditorium (http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu), a replacement for the renowned performing arts center damaged in a 2008 flood. The firm was one of four finalists in a
selection process that attracted 59 entrants from around the world.

“We are honored to be selected to design the new Hancher Auditorium,” said Cesar Pelli, FAIA, senior principal of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. “We look forward to creating a building that will capture the energy and excitement of this great institution.”

Known for its innovative programming and for commissioning new works of music and dance, Hancher Auditorium is among the nation’s top university-based performance venues. The new building will overlook the Iowa River from atop a hill on the main route into Iowa City. Just north of the original 1972 Max Abramovitz building, the site is adjacent to the Levitt Center, a campus landmark. The design will draw from the site’s natural surroundings and sustainability will be a priority.

“The new Hancher Auditorium will have a forward-looking, highly sustainable design,” said Fred Clarke, FAIA, senior principal of the firm. “This will truly be a performing arts center for the 21st century.”

The new 144,770-gross-square-foot building will include a proscenium theater and spaces for rehearsals and teaching. Construction of the building, which will be partially funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is expected to begin in spring 2012.

Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects has designed leading performing arts centers including the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, Wisc. Power distribution pole achieves strength and durability with lightweight concrete and Owens Corning Cem-FIL(R) glass fibers

The world’s first full-scale production facility making breakthrough composite power distribution poles has opened by Dulhunty Power Ltd., in Australia. The composite poles are the first to provide strength, durability and fire resistance by combining the three technologies of filament-winding, high-performance concrete and alkali-resistant (AR) glass reinforcements.

Developed by CMT Worldwide and Langdale Industries, the Eco-Titan(TM) composite pole is made with lightweight concrete, Owens Corning Cem-FIL(R) AR glass fibers and a vertical winding process that maximizes the performance of the raw materials and includes no metal. The result is:

- Glass fiber reinforcement percentage by weight of 15 percent,

which is three times the 5 percent typically achieved in a

glass-reinforced concrete application

- Total weight that is less than half the weight of a comparable

wooden pole while achieving break and deflection test results that are

well within current standards

- Non-flammable and impervious to the ultraviolet (UV) rays in

sunshine

- Non-corrosive, nonconductive and no electromagnetic interference

A study comparing the carbon footprint of the composite concrete pole with other poles typically used found the composite concrete pole to have the smallest carbon footprint of any of the manufactured poles. It was second only to treated wood at the 50-year expected lifespan of the wooden pole. At the projected 70-year lifespan for the composite concrete pole, the carbon footprint of the composite pole was clearly superior.

According to CMT Worldwide, the global distribution pole market is moving to engineered products for safety, cost and ease of use. The share of market for alternative materials is now approaching 40 percent and expected to continue growing rapidly in the next five to 10 years.

“Eco-Titan(TM) composite poles are the first truly new product for the power distribution market in 15 years,” says Allen Sells, president of CMT Worldwide. “Our combination of materials and process technology results in an incredibly strong high-performance pole with excellent strength-to-weight qualities and the lowest carbon footprint of any manufactured pole product.”

Owens Corning supported development of the composite concrete pole with technology for the reinforcements and fabrics. The company’s Cem-FIL(R) AR glass reinforcements provide strength and durability in a wide variety of cement- and mortar-based composite applications including new and restored building facades, industrial flooring and tunnel lining.

“Glass fiber-reinforced concrete poles combine the benefits of composites and concrete,” said Benoit Lorre, business development leader, Cem-FIL(R) glass fibers. “The result is a strong, lightweight and fire-safe pole that gives the market another way to move to composites and away from wood.”

Dulhunty Power was the first licensee outside North America. Poles from the company’s plant in Moolap, Victoria provide a needed option for utilities facing the threat of bushfire events each summer. Huge fires in the state of Victoria in February 2009 burned poles and downed power lines.

Fire testing was carried out earlier this year at Western Fire Center, Inc., in Kelso, Wash., USA. The two-step process subjected poles to accelerated weathering and direct flame. The test report from Western Fire said the composite concrete poles demonstrated performance they deem “Excellent.”

Building designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects to open in 2017

Construction began today with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Transbay Transit Center, San Francisco’s new state-of-the-art, multi-modal transportation hub designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. Scheduled to open in 2017, this landmark glass-and-steel structure will connect the city and the Bay Area via 11 public transit systems. Notably, the Transbay Transit Center will be the San Francisco station for California High Speed Rail and the first new high-speed rail station in the United States. Conceived as “the Grand Central of the West,” the building is designed in the spirit of the great train stations of the world. The highly sustainable and accessible building is distinguished by dramatic light-filled spaces and a 5.4-acre rooftop park.

“We are very proud of our design for the Transbay Transit Center,” said Cesar Pelli, Senior Principal of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, whose winning design was selected in an international competition in 2007. “This will be a beautiful, functional and sustainable building for San Francisco.”

The project, which is being built on the site of the Transbay Terminal at First and Mission streets, will also spur development in the surrounding city blocks and anchor a new neighborhood.

“We are very excited about the civic mission of the Transbay project,” said Fred Clarke, Senior Principal of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. “We want this to be a great transit center – one by which the city is perceived – but it must also be a great neighbor.”

The Transbay Transit Center is designed to be graceful, luminous, welcoming and safe. An exterior glass wall with undulating forms like petals of a flower will create a civilized presence on the street. These undulations also respond to the building’s robust concrete-and-steel structural system, which is engineered for performance in the event of severe earthquakes.

A public plaza on Mission Street marks the primary entrance to the Transit Center. The main public space – the Grand Hall – will be suffused with natural light. The central element, a 120-foot-tall “light column,” is a structural component that reaches from the park to the Lower Concourse. Topped with a 4,000-square-foot domed skylight, the light column not only supports the building, but draws daylight deep into the interior and frames views of the park above.

A richly varied place offering both activity and quiet relaxation, the park will be part of the daily experience of people living and working in the neighborhood. Walking paths, playgrounds, cafes, a 1,000-person performance venue, and 12 gardens, each representing a different natural environment, will form a full-fledged urban park. In addition, a 1,000-foot-long fountain will have jets of water triggered by the movement of buses below. Over time, bridges will be added to connect adjacent buildings to the park, fully integrating it into San Francisco’s urban fabric.

As one of the country’s greenest buildings, the Transbay Transit Center will use multiple sustainable design strategies. The most visible is the park, which will absorb and filter pollutants through its trees, landscape and water management system. Beneath the Transit Center, a massive geothermal heat exchange system will be built into the building’s foundation. Running the length of 4 1/2 city blocks, it will be one of the largest geothermal installations in the world. To further reduce energy consumption, the building will be naturally ventilated and most spaces will be naturally lit. Finally, the building will manage stormwater and reuse greywater. The water reuse and conservation system will save 9.2 million gallons per year, the equivalent of 19 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The building is targeted to achieve a Gold LEED rating.

Intended to be a destination for both transit users and the general public, the building will offer street-level shops, cafes and public promenades. In addition, the architecture integrates works by significant contemporary artists including James Carpenter, Julie Chang, Jenny Holzer, and Ned Kahn.

Iconic Landmark Receives ENERGY STAR Recognition from the Environmental Protection Agency

The ground-breaking energy efficiency work at the Empire State Building has achieved a milestone on its journey for sustainability leadership in the commercial real estate community by receiving an ENERGY STAR rating of 90 from the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The designation for the Empire State Building signifies that the property’s energy performance is in the top tenth percentile of all commercial office buildings, new and old, across the nation. An ENERGY STAR rating of 90 was a stated objective in the iconic property’s overall sustainability retrofit initiative launched in April 2009.

ENERGY STAR is a governmental recognition program that offers organizations access to resources that help evaluate their building’s energy performance, reduce energy usage and lessen their overall carbon footprint. To obtain a certificate, a number of structural and energy output goals must be met and verified by a licensed engineer. Only buildings with a rating of 75 points or above (out of 100), are eligible for certification.

Anthony E. Malkin of Malkin Holdings which directs the operation of the international icon on behalf of building owner Empire State Building Company stated, “Receiving an ENERGY STAR rating of 90 out of 100 is a significant accomplishment for any building, and an especially groundbreaking accomplishment for our Pre-War Trophy Empire State Building.” He added, “With the building’s overall energy efficiency retrofit project still in progress, we may see a higher number when all of the initiatives are completed.”

In April 2009, President Bill Clinton, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and the Empire State Building partnership team consisting of the Clinton Climate Initiative, Johnson Controls, Jones Lang LaSalle, and the Rocky Mountain Institute announced details of an energy retrofit as part of a $550 million upgrade program. The overall project is aimed at reinventing the iconic landmark by restoring and recreating its Art Deco grandeur and adding state-of-the-art enhancements, while at the same time reducing energy consumption, operating costs and carbon emissions. Most importantly, the work pioneered by the team is a replicable model for similar projects around the world.

Upon completion in 2013, the $20 million sustainability retrofit is expected to reduce energy consumption by more than 38 percent and will save the building over $4.4 million per year. Achieving a high ENERGY STAR rating was one of the initial goals outlined by the ESB management team, and was accomplished in less than 13 months.

The retrofit is comprised of eight key initiatives:

1. Window Light Retrofit: Refurbishment of approximately 6,500 thermopane glass windows, using existing glass and sashes to create triple-glazed insulated panels with new components that dramatically reduce both summer heat load and winter heat loss.

2. Radiator Insulation Retrofit: Added insulation behind radiators to reduce heat loss and more efficiently heat the building perimeter.

3. Tenant Lighting, Daylighting and Plug Upgrades:
Introduction of improved lighting designs, daylighting controls, and plug load occupancy sensors in common areas and tenant spaces to reduce electricity costs and cooling loads.

4. Air Handler Replacements: Replacement of air handling units with variable frequency drive fans to allow increased energy efficiency in operation while improving comfort for individual tenants.

5. Chiller Plant Retrofit: Reuse of existing chiller shells while removing and replacing “guts” to improve chiller efficiency and controllability, including the introduction of variable frequency drives.

6. Whole-Building Control System Upgrade: Upgrade of existing building control system to optimize HVAC operation as well as provide more detailed sub-metering information.

7. Ventilation Control Upgrade: Introduction of demand control ventilation in occupied spaces to improve air quality and reduce energy required to condition outside air.

8. Tenant Energy Management Systems: Introduction of individualized, web-based power usage systems for each tenant to allow more efficient management of power usage.

In addition to ENERGY STAR certification, the work at the Empire State Building would qualify under current standards for LEED-EB Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council.
