It’s one of the most unanimously popular and tried technical trading patterns, and normally signifies a strong reversal in the current price trend.

But how do you read, identify, and trade the head and shoulders pattern? Let’s take a brief look.

Typically, the head and shoulders pattern is characterised by the following:

A price rise

A subsequent decline

A price rise that achieves higher highs than the previous rise

Another decline

A price rise that matches the high of the first price rise

Emergence into strong downtrend that takes out the support or ‘neckline’

Once the head and shoulders pattern is complete, a common method by technical analysts is to place buy orders just outside the ‘neckline’ to capitalise on potential breakouts to the upside. However, throwbacks can often occur, whereby the price fails to make its big move anticipated by the pattern and undergoes a brief but nonetheless alarming reversal.

Just like any other trading method, the head and shoulders pattern should only be used as an indicator, and not an exact science.

“Encouraging Growth at a Difficult Time”

GUANGZHOU, China, May 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Difficult financial and job market conditions in Europe and the United States have impacted on trade at the 111th Canton Fair, the world’s largest trade show held in China concluded early this May, although the slowdown was far less than many had expected.

The event still managed to post some record-breaking figures: as of May 4th, 210,000 buyers from 213 countries and regions had attended, up 0.23% and 1.23% from the 110th and 109th sessions in 2011 respectively.

Troubling times in the US and Europe were reflected in the total value of export deals concluded at the Fair. These fell 2.3% year-on-year to US$36.03 billion, down 4.8% from last year’s autumn session. The trade volume of the US and Europe was down 8.1% and 5.6% respectively.

On a positive note the number of export deals concluded with companies based in emerging markets – such as India, Brazil and Russia – displayed an encouraging 4.1% increase. The volume of trade with African countries also rose sharply to 13.5%. These figures illustrate the rising of emerging market as new stars of the world, and Canton Fair, being one of the most influential trade events in global import and export, offers business opportunities for growth even at a difficult time.

The experience of those who visited the Fair was also overwhelmingly positive.

“This is my first time to be in the Canton Fair,” said Kristrian Holmqvist, a buyer from a trading company in Finland. “It saved me a lot of time from going to many places to search for new suppliers. For the financial crisis around the world, it’s hard to say that it has specific effect on my business. But the Canton Fair does provide better ideas on doing trade business and make us to be more competitive.”

“I think the world economy is experiencing a recession, but it is a good time for us to develop,” said Hassan El Bizri from Brazil.

7.1 Percent Growth in Cruise Industry In Mexico

Mexico has retained the coveted position as number one recipient of cruise lines, globally. Over 800,000 cruise ships docked at Mexico’s sun drenched shores in 2011, adding over $500 million to Mexico’s economy in both revenue and jobs. In the Port of Antwerp the construction of the second lock on the Left Bank has officially started. Over the coming years the new construction project will be one of the biggest infrastructure projects in Belgium, with 255 people working daily on building the biggest lock in the world. The lock is due to open in 2016 and will cost around EUR 340 million of which 50% will be financed by the European Investment Bank. The Flemish KBC Bank is also making available a EUR 81 million credit line, with the balance being provided by the Antwerp Port Authority and the Flemish Government.

In recent years the development of the Port of Antwerp has been concentrated on the Left Bank. With a number of important projects planned, such as the lengthening of the Verrebroek dock and the development of the Saeftinghe zone, a second point of access to the sea is essential. “The second lock is key to the further expansion of our port on the Left Bank of the Scheldt”, said Alderman for the Port Marc Van Peel. “With a second lock and the deepening of the Scheldt completed last year, the Antwerp Port Authority is responding in an appropriate manner to the increase in the scale of shipping traffic and we are maintaining our position as the number two in Europe.”

The new lock will be at the end of the Deurganck dock and will provide the link to the sea between the Scheldt and the Waasland Canal. The lock will give shipping rapid access to all other docks on the Left Bank: the Doel dock, the Verrebroek dock, the Vrasene dock and the North and South Insteek dock. The design of the new lock will be based on that of the Berendrecht lock, which currently holds the title of biggest lock in the world. Like the Berendrecht lock, it will be 500 metres long and 68 metres wide. The new lock – at 17.80 metres below the local datum level – will be deeper than the Berendrecht lock and thus rank as the biggest lock in the world when it opens in 2016. Pulling of this difficult feat will of course be no easy matter. Over the next few years no less than 9.1 million mcubed of earth will be excavated. Some 22 000 tons of structural steel will be used, three times the amount required to build the Eiffel Tower.

The Stena Superior is the first Suezmax tanker in the series of seven vessels of which most will join the successful Stena Sonangol Suezmax Pool. The Pool was formed in 2005 and is controlled by Stena Bulk and the state-owned Angolan oil company Sonangol.

These new series of Suezmax tankers have a dramatically improved energy efficiency, which will among other things, reduce bunker consumption by up to 15 percent compared with the most efficient, conventional Suezmax tankers currently on the waters.

The container ships arriving in the port of Antwerp continue to score a series of “firsts.” On the evening of 22 June the Maersk Enfield called in Antwerp on its maiden voyage. With a capacity of 13,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) this is the first time that the Danish company, Maersk Line, has sent ships of such a size to Antwerp. The increase in scale demonstrates the great confidence that the port of Antwerp inspires following completion of the third round of deepening of the river Scheldt. “The deepening has turned out to be a commercial success. We are now a top-level player, with the largest container lines in the world placing their confidence in Antwerp,” declared Marc Van Peel, port alderman and chairman of the Port Authority.

Antwerp has witnessed a spectacular increase in the number of calls by ultra-large container ships (ULCS) during the past few months. Thanks to the deepening of the Scheldt these behemoths can count on tide-independent navigation with draughts of up to 13.10 metres. If allowance is made for the tide, then the maximum draught at the moment is 15.50 metres. At the end of 2009 the maximum (tide-dependent) draught was still only 14 metres. Thanks to the deepening, shipping companies can now load an additional 1,500 TEU on board their vessels when calling at Antwerp. The Permanent Commission for Scheldt Navigation will continue to review the conditions for port access. In the meantime it is investigating the possibility of reducing the keelroom percentage when passing the “thresholds” on the way to the sea.

By choosing Antwerp, shipping companies opt not only for accessibility but also for sustainability. “Our location deep inland is greatly appreciated in this respect,” declared Marc Van Peel. “Antwerp is 100 kilometres farther inland than other ports on the Hamburg – Le Havre range. This means maximum use can be made of shipping transport as opposed to road or rail, which not only saves time and cost but also reduces the carbon footprint. During its stay in Antwerp the Maersk Enfield will berth in the Deurganck dock on the left bank. Twenty-four hours after its arrival it will leave for Felixstowe in the UK.

Defying the challenging economic environment, the Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone Authority (RAK FTZ) – one of the fastest-growing and most cost-effective free trade zones in the UAE – continued to achieve steady growth in its portfolio and revenue during 2010.

RAK FTZ registered 1,740 new free zone companies during the last calendar year, while its International Companies (IC) division registered a record number of 1,499, signifying a 14.65% increase in the total number of registrations compared to 2009. Licence renewals also achieved a significant growth of 16.49% in 2010, with 3,271 companies renewing their business licences, reinforcing the free zone’s reputation as one of the most attractive investment zones in the Middle East. As of the end of 2010, the total number of actively operational registered companies in RAK FTZ stood at over 5,000.

In its Annual Performance Report for 2010, RAK FTZ also announced that its total revenue during the year grew by 10% compared to 2009.

The massive marketing campaign organised locally and internationally by RAK FTZ during its hosting of the 10th World Free Zone Convention in Ras Al Khaimah last year contributed to the positive results achieved by Ras Al Khaimah’s free zones in 2010. In all, a total of more than 4,500 new companies registered in all the zones in Ras Al Khaimah, boosting the emirate’s economic growth and GDP for 2010. Meanwhile, development projects throughout RAK also remained on course, including the nearly completed Mina Al Arab, the Al Hamra area, and new investments in the tourism and industrial sectors, such as the vehicle assembly plant of Ashok Leyland, representing a total investment of USD 50 million.

Expressing his delight at RAK FTZ’s achievements in 2010, Oussama El Omari, CEO of RAK FTZ, said, “We are extremely proud of how successful our strategies have been in these extremely challenging economic environments. Buyer Attendance Decreased Slightly with Slight Growth in Turnover

Witnessing Trend of Enterprises’ Structures in Transition

China’s biggest and most influential professional trade event, the 108th Canton Fair concluded successfully on November 4th. 200,612 overseas buyers from 208 countries and regions around the world attended the fair, on par with 107th session with only a 2.38% decrease, but it was an increase of 5.7% over the same period last year. The top five countries and regions with buyers represented were: Hong Kong SAR, the United States, Taiwan Province, Iran and Russia.

This session of the Canton Fair ran smoothly. Overseas visitors were active in attending the fair and the atmosphere of negotiation was warm. Compared with the 107th session, buyer attendance witnessed a slight decrease while business turnover saw some growth, but not yet to a pre-crisis level. Compared with the figures before the Financial Crisis, it’s rare that the buyer attendance drops slightly while business turnover could achieve a slight increase. It shows that the proportion of effective buyers increased this session, however demand is affected by both the trend of recovery and expectations of uncertainty. Market differentiation also shows that different countries are in different stages of recovery of their domestic markets and that the foundations for a world-wide economic recovery have not been consolidated, and the future remains uncertain.

Mr. Liu Jianjun, Spokesman of the Canton Fair, emphasizes that with the dual impacts of rising prices for raw materials and the appreciation of the RMB, the pressure of bargaining for export enterprises is increasing greatly. In recent years, most enterprises have continuously strengthened their efforts and investments in brand-building and design innovation and generally attached great importance to the research and development of products and the concept of environmental protection. The trend of transition from OEM to ODM is quite obvious.

The next Canton Fair will run during April and May next year, once again in the city of Guangzhou, China.

Figures released by the quality control industry in Asia are good indicators of the health of international trade. AsiaInspection with over 11,000 inspections, audits, and laboratory tests performed during the second quarter of 2010 (+38% from Q2 2009), has identified some interesting trends.

Q2 2010 inspection figures indicate that as China increasingly makes efforts to improve export quality, their consumer products have become even more attractive to importers. Total inspections performed in China are up 35%, exhibiting that China’s unparalleled economic growth-rate continues; making it clear that the sleeping dragon is awake and has just begun its ascent.

Crouching Vietnam, Soaring Dragon

This economic growth continues despite a recent wave of labor disputes in factories across Southern China that many had believed would benefit China’s “cheaper” neighbors; however, so far the numbers don’t support this.  While China continues to flex its manufacturing might, the same cannot be said for its Asian counterparts.  Most notably, Vietnam posted a 0% change in year over year growth in performed inspections.  China has attracted the lion’s share of foreign direct investment coming into Asia, which is clearly reflected in its export growth relative to its neighbors.

Garments and textiles saw the largest year over year increase.  A steady increase in the quality of fabrics and apparel from Chinese factories has grown this industry by improving consumer confidence.

US Outpaces EU as Greece Weighs Down Europe

Starting off the year, Q1 figures had the US and the EU posting nearly identical growth, from Q1 2009, in ordered inspections; +11.2% and +11.3% respectively. Q2 2010 numbers however, indicate that while product inspections from the US were up +46%, the EU was down -3.8%; due in large part to the damage caused by recent troubles in Greece permeating other EU member economies.

North America’s largest fiber to the home trade show, the 2010 FTTH Conference & Expo (http://www.ftthconference.com ), will take place September 12-16, 2010 at the Venetian Hotel-Resort-Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Canton Fair: At the Heart of Global Trade Since 1957

Repeat buyers at the 107th Canton Fair, China’s largest, most comprehensive trade fair, may find themselves as much in awe as their first time around. Things have gotten so big since the event’s modern inauguration over fifty years ago that some anticipate it to rival the World Expo in Shanghai. After some analysis, it hasn’t been hard to see why.

For most years in recent memory, the Canton Fair has seen attendance of nearly 200,000 merchants from more than 200 countries and regions around the world. After all, the Fair has regularly provided them with the ease and convenience of being able to manage their international retail and wholesale business needs simultaneously, in one spot. Even in the aftermath of the global economic crisis, participants didn’t seem daunted; indeed, the organizer has been continuously tweaking plans to accommodate buyers’ ever-growing demands.

With the aim of facilitating the objectives of buyers and exhibitors, the fair has been divided into three phases, each arranged according to product type, which is logical when you consider the reasons for people’s attendance. Among many elements that consistently convince the commercially savvy to return, ultimately it’s the sheer variety of products on display that brings them back. Over two-thirds of interviewed buyers said the same when polled. Unsurprisingly, they also noted the excellent service, number of new products, number of participating merchants and immense exhibition area as clinchers.

What’s particularly remarkable about the Canton Fair are not these ubiquitous tangibles. While the visible incentives on offer are decidedly appealing, the turmoil of the international economy could easily make them seem null and void and detract from participant enthusiasm. This isn’t the case, though, as most buyers seem as confident as ever. Over 60 percent of buyers claim that not only do they plan to purchase as much as in the past, but it’s likely that in the future they’ll return home with even more. If that doesn’t spell confidence for you, consider this: upwards of 90 percent of 2009′s participants will be back in 2010. Good work, Mr. Canton Fair: not bad for an old guy.
