Karachi, November 21, 2014 (PPI-OT): The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) donated 550 motorcycles to the Government of Sindh’s Department of Health to improve health coverage across the province. Leon S. Waskin, Acting Consul General, U.S. Consulate General Karachi and Dr. Jam MehtabDahar, Provincial Minister for Health, attended.

“It is truly tragic,” said Mr. Waskin, “that despite modern advancements in prevention and cure of diseases, easily preventable ailments continue to spread and affect people. USAID is here to help.”
Lack of sufficient means for transportation is a major hindrance to government efforts to reach households. Initially, USAID motorcycles will provide the Sindh Department of Health with 50 motorcycles each forThatta, Tharparker, Jacobabad and Kashmore districts.

Soon afterward, it will supply more forDadu, Khairpur, Tando Allah Yar, Umerkot, Nausheroferoz, Sukkur and Sanghar districts. USAID will also support training of health careworkers and field staff to improve planning and management skills.

USAID’s flagship $387 million Maternal and Child Health Program is designed to assist the government of Pakistan in meeting primary health needs of marginalized and vulnerable populations. Program components include health systems strengthening, family planning and reproductive health, maternal newborn and child health, health communications, and health commodities and supply chains.
