Karachi, October 17, 2012 (PPI-OT): Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah today presided a high level meeting of Sindh Irrigation Department, held at Chief Minister House. The meeting was attended by Sindh Irrigation Secretary Mr. Babar Effendi, Managing Director Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA) Mr. Ahsan Leghari, Secretary to C.M Sindh Agha Jan Akhtar and Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers of various circles and sections of Irrigation Department.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister Sindh who is also the incharge Minister Irrigation said that Irrigation department is very important department and its importance increases as the economy of our province is agro-based and water being supplied to growers under irrigation system and network plays important role for the production.

Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that there are complaints from not only the growers and cultivators but also from elected representatives, and the complaints of corruption which will be eradicated with prompt measures. Chief Minster Sindh expressed his dissatisfaction over performance of some of the sections, particularly the work done on flood protective bunds from Gudu to Thatta.

The Chief Minister Sindh added that the President of Pakistan Mr. Asif Ali Zardari has directed that there should be justified distribution of water amongst growers and cultivators so as to achieve maximum crop production, Chief Minister Sindh has further directed to improve the performance of department in the larger interest of the province. Regarding provision of funds for development schemes, the Chief Minister Sindh assured that funds will be provided as per needs and specifications while there will be monitoring and vigilance of those schemes.

He stressed that quality work will be encouraged and the water be provided according to land holding and crop position. Sindh Irrigation Secretary Mr. Babar Effendi in his detailed briefing on Rain / Flood situation 2012, said that there was heavy Monsoon rain from 6th September 2012 in upper Sindh and Balochistan and six districts of Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Larkana, Qambar, Shahdadkot and Ghotki were badly affected. He added that 21627 Square Kilometres area was affected where as 49 de- watering pumps have been installed there.

The Managing Director, SIDA gave details of various projects of department, while the Project Director, Small Dams organization presented briefing on Small Dams in Sindh. He said that the Kohistan region, Nagarparkar and Ubhan Shah Hill areas are main potential sites of Sindh province for constructing Small Dams, Delay Action Dams, weirs and Bunds to retain the run off water generated from storm rainfall.

He said that Small Dams Organization has initiated seven (7) feasibility studies, out of which 4 studies have been completed. He further said that in Nagarparkar areas, weirs of 5 no. rehabilitation of Irrigation bunds/DAD, 1 no. Lakhhay-Jo-Wandio weir and 12 Nos Gasion Dams had been carried out under ADP and completed in June 2011.

The project Director further added that is Kohistan region 12 Nos. Small Dams, weirs and DADS, under ADP has been completed up to June 2012. He said that in total 12030 Kms catchment area and annual run off is 621326- ac. Ft while area under benefit is 781305- acres in upper Kohistan, central Kohistan (excluding Gaj), Lower Kohistan (including Baran), Karoonjhar Hills and Ubhan Shah Hills (Khairpur / Sukkur) region. Chief Minister Sindh stressed that all sources of water be presented for better use in agriculture sector, which is essential for economic development of province.
