International Institute of Strategic Studies delegation calls on Foreign Secretary

Islamabad: A five-member delegation of the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS), London, led by Mr. Adam Ward, Director Studies, called on Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir today. They exchanged views on issues affecting Pakistan, the South Asian region and the world at large.

2. The Foreign Secretary stated that the world was changing at a very fast pace, creating ever more and newer challenges and opportunities. Pakistan was also transforming significantly. Democracy, pluralism, the rapidly growing civil society, women’s empowerment, free media and independent judiciary were all adding to Pakistan’s strengths.

In the last three years, Pakistan had realigned its foreign policy to peace and development agenda of Pakistan. Accordingly, the democratic government of Pakistan had been focusing on reviving the economy through bold structural decisions and by promoting regional economic cooperation.

He emphasized that the people of Pakistan, who had been showing remarkable resilience in the ongoing fight against terrorism and natural calamities, were determined to continue Pakistan’s march towards peace and prosperity.

3. Foreign Secretary Bashir also briefed the IISS delegation on the regional situation including the upcoming International Conference on Afghanistan in Bonn on 5 December, and Pakistan-India relations in the context of the resumed dialogue process.

4. Earlier, the third round of dialogue was held between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the IISS. From the Pakistan side, the dialogue was led by Additional Foreign Secretary Abdul Basit. Discussions were held on counterterrorism, Pakistan-India relations, Afghanistan and Disarmament and non-proliferation led by Additional Foreign Secretaries Alamgir Babar, Munawar Saeed Bhatti and Sajjad Kamran.

5. The MOFA-IISS Dialogue process was initiated in 2007. The first and second rounds were held in London and Islamabad, respectively. The next round will be held in London in the second half of 2012.

Commander International Security Assistance Force called on Chief of Army Staff

Rawalpindi: General John Allen, Commander International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani at General Headquarters today.

The visiting dignitary remained with him for some time and discussed measures concerning coordination, communication and procedures between Pakistan Army, ISAF and Afghan Army, aimed at enhancing border control on both sides.

Raja Pervez Ashraf, Member of National Assembly Elected Chairman Special Committee to Oversee the Implementation of Resolution of All Parties Conference

Islamabad: The Special Committee to oversee the implementation of resolution of All Parties Conference (APC) in its meeting held today in Parliament House unanimously elected Raja Pervez Ashraf, MNA as its chairman.

The Committee meeting was chaired by Additional Secretary National Assembly. The name of Raja Pervez Ashraf for the Chairmanship of the said committee was proposed by Dr. Ayatullah Durrani, MNA and seconded by all other members present in the meeting.

After assuming the chair, the Chairman thanked his fellow parliamentarians for reposing confidence on him by electing him as chairman. He said that with the concerted efforts of all the Members, he would make the committee purposeful and result oriented. Later, all Members of the Committee congratulated Raja Pervez Ashraf.

Women Members of provincial Assembly Urge the Need to Raise Voices in Order to Break Silence to End the Violence against the Women and Girls

Islamabad: The Minister of Women and Equality UK, Ms. Theresa May has said that UK would extend its all-out support to the Government of Pakistan for the socio-economic uplift of womenfolk and addressing the impediments confronting the gender equality. She said this while talking to Women Parliamentarians in Parliament House, today in a meeting along with British High Commissioner and other delegates.

While talking to the Women MPs, she said that UK acknowledges the proactive policies of the present democratic dispensation towards uplift of womenfolk and rich tributes to the visionary leadership of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, Ms. Teresa May said that she was a staunch supporter of women rights and womenfolk in Pakistan was given extended role in national affairs in her tenure as Prime Minister. She said that her discourse with Women Parliamentarians was an ideal opportunity which coincided with the International Day to end violence against women.

Dr. Nafisa Shah, Secretary General Women Parliamentary Caucus welcomed the visiting delegates and said that violence against women was a condemnable act whether it occurs in private or public. She said that womenfolk comprise a large portion of the country’s population and denial of their unalienable rights was neither permitted by Islam nor the universally acclaimed human rights. She appreciated the support of UK for women uplift in Pakistan.

She apprised the visiting dignitary about the laws passed by the present parliament for prevention of violence against women and ensuring their economic and social rights which were the initiatives of the WPC. She called for continuity of support by the friendly countries specially UK for achieving the targets.

She also briefed the dignitary about the composition and working of WPC. Later on the British delegates and women Parliamentarians jointly signed the declaration on the international day to end the violence against women and girls.

President’s meeting with some selected Federal Ministers and senior leadership of Pakistan People’s Party

Islamabad: A meeting of some selected Ministers and senior leadership of the Party was held in the Presidency under the Chairmanship of the President Asif Ali.

Senator Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, Ch. Ahmed Mukhtar, Mr. A. Rehman Malik, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, Syed Naveed Qamar, Mian Raza Rabbani, Dr. Babar Awan, Senator Faisal Raza Abidi, Senator Sardar Ali, Mr. Nazar Muhammad Gondal, Mr. Qamar Zaman Kaira, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Ms. Rukhsana Bangash, Ms. Fouzia Wahab, Ms. Fouzia Habib and Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar were present during the meeting.

Current political situation in the country was discussed during the meeting.

Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar said that the meeting decided to step up the consultative process with the political forces and the coalition partners to overcome the challenges facing the country.

It also decided that the policy of reconciliation would continue.
