Kashmiri students thrashed in Bangalore, two injured

Srinagar, March 31, 2013 (PPI-OT): Two Kashmiri students were injured after a group of undergraduates attacked them with rods and iron chairs in Bangalore, India.

Kashmiri students pursuing B Tech at Ghousia College of Engineering in Ramanagaram on Bangalore outskirts in Karnataka told a Srinagar-based daily over phone that a group of undergraduates let loose a reign of terror by breaking into their hostel rooms and beating two of them ruthlessly. “Wasif Khan from Lolab and Ishfaq Butt from Pampore pursuing B Tech Engineering (Civil) received injuries in head, eye and back. Wasif received three stitches,” said one of their classmates.

He said that On Thursday students hailing from Bihar and Kashmir had an argument over some issue. However, the matter was sorted out by teachers. “Kashmiri students were asked to apologize despite no fault of theirs,” he added.

“In the evening, when we were in the hostel, a group of undergraduates carrying rods broke into the rooms and started beating us. They went into four rooms and ransacked everything. They pushed Wasif and Ishfaq to the wall and thrashed them with rods and iron chair as if they were playing wrestling,” the Kashmiri students added.

They said that their hostel rooms were locked on Friday morning by the group and they could not attend classes for the whole day. “We lodged a complaint in the Police Station but they arrested us in turn. College authorities threatened us of dire consequences for lodging a compliant,” they said.

“It is completely frustrating here the way college authorities are behaving with us. We are living under fear psychosis. We fear for our lives,” said a final year student of B Tech from south Kashmir. “We are being continuously attacked. We don’t feel secure here,” he added.

The parents, whose children study outside the occupied territory, have expressed apprehensions over the security of their wards and incident at Bangalore has unnerved them. “Our sons have become victims of a deep-rooted conspiracy,” said, Professor Mushtaq Mehdi of Srinagar, whose son also studies at Ghousia College.

A resident of Lal Bazaar Dr Shabbeer Ahmad said, he calls his son four times a day to enquire about his safety. “We are worried about the safety of our children as they are being harassed there day in and day out,” he stated.

Dozens remain lodged in various police stations of Srinagar

Srinagar, March 31, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, dozens of youth are presently lodged in different police stations of Srinagar for participating in recent demonstrations against the hanging of Muhammad Afzal Guru while dossiers have also been issued to book five persons under the draconian law, Public Safety Act (PSA).

A Srinagar-based daily reported that the Indian police are detaining the youth across the Kashmir Valley in a bid to prevent 2010-like mass uprising in the Valley.

Since the hanging of Muhammad Afzal Guru on February 9, police have arrested over 500 youth, including Hurriyet leaders and activists, from different areas of the territory. Most of them were arrested from Srinagar, Baramulla, Pulwama and Islamabad districts.

In Srinagar, raids and arrests continue and 40 youth still remain lodged in different police stations.

Residents of several areas of Srinagar told the daily that police were carrying out nocturnal raids which had created fear among them, especially the youth. Most of the youth have been arrested from Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Soura and Battamaloo areas of the city. The residents said that police were hunting for several other youth from old city areas.

The frequent raids by police have forced many youth to go into hiding to evade arrest. “Several youth from old Srinagar areas have left their homes and are putting up with their relatives or friends,” a delegation of Saraf Kadal residents told the daily. “Some have even gone outside the Valley due to police fear. We are unable to understand why police are carrying out these arrests,” the residents added.
