Government pledges to extend full support to Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry OIC Investment Conference

Lahore, January 31, 2014 (PPI-OT): The Government on Friday pledged to extend full support to 2nd LCCI OIC Investment Conference scheduled for April 2g014. The assurance was given by the Governor Punjab Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar while talking to a five member delegation led by LCCI President Engineer Sohail Lashari and comprising Senior Vice President Mian Tariq Misbah, Vice President Kashif Anwar, Chairman LCCI OIC Committee Husnain Raza Mirza and Vice Chairman Syed Mehmood Ghaznvi. While appreciating the Lahore Chamber initiative, the Governor said that the OIC countries must enhance their interaction as the trade has emerged as engine of growth and prosperity of nations.

The OIC countries with their immense natural and human resources, have great potential for economic cooperation. However, the existing level of intra-OIC trade was far below this potential. He added that the global Halal Market alone has a very huge potential and the OIC countries must leverage their comparative advantage in Halal products by ensuring highest standards of quality.

The Governor was of the view that if the private sector and the government of OIC countries pool their efforts to increase their trade, nothing can stop them from becoming an economic block in the real term. He said that the Punjab government was putting in its best efforts to get foreign investment and had already signed a number of agreements to facilitate the foreign investors. He said that the LCCI initiative would be supplementing the government’s efforts and it was a right step in right direction.

Speaking on the occasion, the LCCI President Engineer Sohail Lashari said that the current level of trade among the OIC countries was disappointing despite the fact that OIC member countries have religious, cultural ties and similarities and huge potential for trade. He said that the population of OIC Countries is one fourth of the total population of the world while their share in total volume of the trade is less than 10 per cent.

The objective of the 2nd LCCI Investment Conference was to identify the impediments to trade and escalate work on dismantling tariff and non-tariff barriers that are stalling growth in trade and investment. Engineer Sohail Lashari said that there is huge potential for increasing the share of the intra-OIC trade to address the issues of poverty, low economic growth and investment in the member states provided the problems restricting interaction and cooperation between private sectors of the member states are removed.

He said that it was very unfortunate that a majority of the Muslim countries prefer trade with other countries than OIC states. “Improvement in trade within the OIC group can be a lot beneficial for the weaker economies”. “Muslim countries do not trade with each other or invest in each other’s economies as they do with the industrialised and developed countries. “In order to attain the goal of progress and prosperity, the member states should start from lower levels of integration such as preferential trade agreements and free trade agreements.

The economy of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) combines the economies of 57 member states. These 57 countries have a combined GDP of $7,740 billion. The richest country on the basis of GDP per capita at PPP is United Arab Emirates. On basis of per capita GDP, Qatar is the richest country with incomes exceeding US$108,000 per capita.

Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front calls for compensation to Metro affectees

Lahore, January 31, 2014 (PPI-OT): Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF) has demanded of Punjab Government to address reservations of affectees of Metro Bus Expansion Plan.

“Punjab government should take all stakeholders into confidence who are too much disturbed because of cold attitude of the officials-responsible otherwise reputation of government would be tarnished in the eye of business community.” The demand was raised at the PIAF Executive Committee meeting held at College of Tourism and Hotel Management (COTHM).

The Chairman PIAF Malik Tahir Javed presided over the meeting while LCCI president Engineer Sohail Lashari, former presidents Muhammad Ali Mian, Irfan Qaiser Sheikh, former Senior Vice President Sheikh Muhammad Arshad and a large number of PIAF EC members were present in the meeting.

The participants were of the view that government should consider some alternate plan as present Metro Bus Expansion Plan would not only deprive millions of workers of major city markets of their jobs besides causing closure of thousands of running businesses.

Chairman PIAF Malik Tahir Javed said that the infrastructure development is meant to expedite economic activities and if it goes the other way round, the government is duty bound to withdraw the decision.

He apprehended that the proposed Metro Expansion Plan would badly hit businesses of almost ten major City markets including Badami Bagh Auto Market, Shoe Market, Azam Cloth Market, Shah Alam Market and Akbari Mandi.

He hoped that the Chief Minister Punjab Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif would issue necessary directions to the concerned department to share Metro Expansion plan with the stakeholders for the removal of their apprehensions that are having sleepless nights as the department responsible for the project had already started marking for initiating demolition of shops coming the way of the project.

The participants of the meeting also showed concern over recent increase in the electricity prices and urged the Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif to suspend the hike in electricity tariff while keeping in view the ongoing situation of trade and Industry.

The participants of the meeting welcomed inauguration of Thar coal project and also appealed to the government to keep Kalabagh Dam alive. At the end of the meeting the COTHM Chief Executive hosted a dinner in the honor of PIAF Executive Committee Members.

JEANRICHARD Kicks off Partnership with Arsenal FC

LA CHAUX-DE-FONDS, Switzerland, Jan. 30, 2014 / PRNewswire — The Swiss watchmaker JEANRICHARD becomes Global Partner as well as “Official Watch” of the emblematic London football club Arsenal FC of the English Premier League. This long-term partnership marks a major step forward for the newest oldest Swiss watch brand that is now going to play in the “Premier League” and for Arsenal that has a very strong global following.

Football, just like watchmaking, is a Philosophy of Life. Team spirit, dedication and passion are common values; joining fans, players, collectors, watchmakers and everyone involved in the history and pioneering spirit of both JEANRICHARD and Arsenal on one common ground. It was therefore a natural decision that both organisations now embark on a new journey together.

What started off in 1886 in Woolwich when a group of factory workers got together to build the “Arsenal”, has gone on to form one of the most successful football teams in English and European history.

Now, over 125 years later, the “Gunners” are not only known for their numerous achievements or their heritage. Arsene Wenger’s philosophy to find the best young talent and develop them into the stars of tomorrow is known the world over.

Just as Arsenal is known to recruit and develop young talents, Daniel Jeanrichard, founder of the watch industry in the late seventeenth century, embarked on a journey to educate the next generation, promoting values nurturing his Philosophy of Life – passion for hard work, authenticity, fair play, team spirit, and loyalty amongst each other. Jeanrichard was careful to hand down the knowledge and the spirit of excellence to future generations, and played an important role in setting up an apprenticeship system that is active to this day.

“A strong heritage combined with young team spirit and style: Arsenal and JEANRICHARD share the same Philosophy of Life,” said Bruno Grande, CEO of the Swiss watchmaker. “Both are considered forward thinkers in their fields and ‘passing on the ball’ is our common approach. The Gunners just as the JEANRICHARD people are out ‘on the field’ to make the most of every moment and strive to accomplish extraordinary things day in and day out with passion and respect.”

“Timing, tempo, style and elegance are key attributes of the way Arsenal play its football and of the JEANRICHARD brand,” said Vinai Venkatesham, Sales and Marketing Director of Arsenal Football Club. “With such a strong fit between our two companies we are delighted to have agreed a long-term partnership with JEANRICHARD.”

Alongside significant presence within the stadium on match days, the Swiss watchmaker will unveil a limited edition “Arsenal” watch in the near future, to drive the success of this partnership on all levels.
