European Commission clears Alstom’s acquisition of Bombardier Transportation

MONTRÉAL, July 31, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bombardier (TSX: BBD.B) and Alstom welcome the European Commission’s decision for conditional clearance of the proposed acquisition of Bombardier Transportation by Alstom. The Commission’s approval for the transaction is conditional on certain proposed engagements that consist of:

  • A transfer of Bombardier Transportation’s contribution to the V300 ZEFIRO very high-speed train and an offer of IP licence to Hitachi for the train co-developed by Hitachi and Bombardier Transportation for use in future very high-speed tenders in the UK;
  • The divestment of the Alstom Coradia Polyvalent and the Reichshoffen production site in France;
  • The divestment of the Bombardier TALENT 3 platform and dedicated production facilities located within the Hennigsdorf site in Germany;
  • Providing access to certain interfaces and products for some of Bombardier Transportation’s Signalling On-Board Units and Train Control Management Systems (TCMS).

The divestitures will be done in compliance with all applicable social processes and consultations with employee representatives’ bodies. The transaction remains subject to further regulatory approvals in several other jurisdictions and customary closing conditions. The closing of the transaction is expected for the first half of 2021.

Govt fully aware of problems of masses: Balochistan Home Minister

Home Minister Balochistan Mir Ziaullah Lango says the government is fully aware of the problems of the people and trying its best to resolve their issues.

Addressing a news conference in Quetta regarding the situation of Chaman border, he said that the government is keenly observing the situation after the closure of border and efforts are being made to provide the local people an alternate source of employment.

He said that the local people and traders were demonstrating a protest against unemployment in Chaman and several people got injured in clashes with security forces when some miscreants tried to enter in red zone area.

Home Minister said the protestors vandalized in the NADRA and Quarantine Centers at Chaman border.

He added that the people involved in today’s incident will be brought to justice after a thorough investigation into the incident.

Coronavirus cases in Punjab decreased: Buzdar

Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Ahmed Buzdar has said that coronavirus cases in the province have decreased due to effective smart lockdown strategy.

In a statement, he said steps taken by Prime Minister Imran Khan to overcome the pandemic are being lauded at the international level.

The Chief Minister urged the people to strictly adhere to SOPs on Eid ul Azha to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

CM Sindh reviews situation after rains in Karachi

A high level meeting presided over by the Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah in Karachi on Friday reviewed the situation after rains in the city.

The meeting was briefed that NDMA and PDMA are working together with the collaboration of Sindh government to drain out the rain water and ensure cleanliness in the city.

Birth anniversary of Fatima Jinnah observed

126th birth anniversary of Madr-e-Millat Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah was observed on Friday.

She was Born on July 31, 1893 in Karachi, Miss Fatima Jinnah obtained a dental degree from Dr. Ahmed Dental College of the University of Calcutta in 1923 and practiced as a dental doctor in Bombay.

She left the profession and worked side by side with her brother, and gathered the women of sub-continent on one platform which made the struggle for achieving a separate state for Muslims easier.

In 1947, Fatima Jinnah formed the Women’s Relief Committee, which later formed the nucleus for the All Pakistan Women’s Association.

Fatima Jinnah is still remembered for her passionate support for civil rights and devoted struggle in Pakistan Movement.

11 more died of corona in Sindh: Sindh Chief Minister

Karachi, July 31, 2020 (PPI-OT): As many as 11,555 samples were tested for coronavirus against which 489 new cases emerged while 11 more virus patients lost their lives, lifting the death toll to 2,220 in Sindh province. This was stated by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in a statement issued here on Friday. The CM said that 11,555 tests were conducted against which 489 new cases were detected that constituted four percent detection rate.

So far 760,036 samples had been tested which diagnosed 121,039 cases that constituted 16 percent overall detection rate. Shah said that overnight 11 more patients died, lifting the death toll to 2,220 that came to 1.8 percent. He added 505 more patients had recovered, taking the number of patients cured so far to 110,738 that constituted 91 percent recovery rate.

According to the CM, currently 8,081 patients were under treatment, of them 7,593 were in home isolation, 12 at isolation centers and 476 at different hospitals. The condition of 385 patients was stated to be critical, of them 65 had been put on ventilators.

Out of 489 new cases, 244 have been detected from Karachi. South has 99, East 37, Korangi 36, West 34, Central 32 and Malir six. Sukkur has 23 new cases, Ghotki 20, Hyderabad, Naushehroferoze, Umerkot and Tando Allahyar 15 each, Badin 12, Matiari 10, Kambar nine, Dadu and Thatta eight, Larkana and Sujawal seven each, Shikarpur six, Shaheed Benazirabad and Tando Mohammad Khan five each, Jacobabad, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar and Jamshoro three each. The CM urged the people of Sindh to stay safe and observe social distancing during the Eid days.
