Pakistan, US reaffirm commitment to promote cooperation in diverse fields

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): Pakistan and United States have reaffirmed their commitment to promoting economic growth, energy security and partnership in long-term flood rehabilitation efforts. This understanding came during a meeting between Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Energy Resources at the U.S. Department of State Geoffery Pyatt and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister appreciated holding of the Pakistan-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue in promoting energy security which would be beneficial for both countries. He encouraged further investment in the country’s energy infrastructure which would also help transition towards clean energy.

Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the ongoing dialogues and cooperation between Pakistan and the United States in areas such as trade and investment, health, security, and climate change. The Assistant Secretary appreciated Pakistan for its forward-looking renewable energy policy.

The Pak-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue is a joint initiative aimed at promoting energy security and serves as a platform for high-level discussions between the United States and Pakistan on bilateral energy priorities, advancing the renewable energy transition, and exploring economic and commercial opportunities in the energy sector.

Assistant Secretary for Oceans, Environment, and Science of the US State Department, Monica Medina, who is also in Pakistan on an official visit, informed the Prime Minister that she is leading a delegation for meetings of the Pak-US Climate and Environment Working Group. She praised the commitment and dedication with which the government of Pakistan had responded to the consequences of the last year’s devastating floods.

The senior U.S. diplomats affirmed the Biden Administration’s desire to enhance Pakistan-U.S. cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, health, security, and climate change. Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South Central Asia, Elizabeth Horst, and Chief Climate Officer, Development Finance Corporation Jake Levine, as well as US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome also attended the meeting.

Steps being taken to prevent electricity theft on priority: PM

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says government is taking steps to prevent theft of electricity on a priority basis. Chairing a meeting regarding provincialization of Electricity Distribution Companies in Islamabad on Wednesday, he said government has formulated a strategy to reduce the losses of the electricity distribution companies in collaboration with the provinces.

The Prime Minister pledged that government will effectively stop elements involved in electricity theft. He said federal government will provide technical assistance to enhance the capacity of the provinces.

Shehbaz Sharif said provinces have better administrative structures for the collection of electricity bills. He said a better management structure for recoveries will play a key role in ending the circular debt. The Prime Minister also established a committee for provincialization of electricity distribution companies to the provinces. The committee will determine the terms of reference in collaboration with the provincial governments.

Chairman FBR visits large Taxpayers Office Lahore Islamabad

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): Chairman Federal Board of Revenue Mr. Asim Ahmad visited the Large Taxpayers Office (LTO) Lahore where he held a detailed meeting with the Chief Commissioner and Commissioners of LTO Lahore. During the meeting, revenue collection for the period of July to February 2023 was discussed at length vis a vis targets assigned.

A detailed discussion was held on challenges being faced in various sectors along with strategy to be adopted to achieve budgetary target for remaining months of the financial year. The Chairman directed the LTO team to ensure that the new budgetary measures are enforced in letter and spirit.

The sugar sector was specifically discussed at length to ensure collection of due taxes in the coming months. Chairman FBR reiterated his resolve to achieve the budgetary target assigned to FBR and the team of LTO Lahore assured that they will make all-out efforts to attain the desired results despite import compression and challenging market conditions.

The Chairman directed the field formations to recover all pending arrears and expeditiously pursue cases pending in courts. The Chairman also discussed problems being faced by the field formations and assured to resolve them as soon as possible.

“Alone we go faster, together we go far” Federal Minister Shazia Marri addressing media persons during “unlocking the power of women entrepreneurs” program at IBA city campus on 15 mar 2023

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister Poverty Alleviation Shazia Marri said “It’s about women recognition since more than 50% of population of this country consists of women yet they need to show cards and slogans and come to streets for Aurat March to speak for our rights”. She further added that in my own constituency I am the first person who managed to succeed against other parties so I can say women have more potential than men and that’s why this forum is really important for women as it provides a platform to them.

The Federal Minister emphasized upon a recent study jointly conducted by IMF and ILO which showed that if gender gap can be reduced in Pakistan, it will result in huge positive impact on GDP of Pakistan. Since Pakistan is going through economic problems at the moment, she said that its time about changing the perspective and focusing on empowering women.

The Federal Minister mentioned that our religion has enjoined many rights for women which can help us in clarifying many myths regarding different social issues. It’s the duty of educated men to stand up for women and talk about issues faced by them. This attitude should prevail so that any discrimination which exist against women would be reduced. Further, she said that these women entrepreneurs will open new pathways for other women in the workforce and she ended her speech by using the proverb “alone we go faster, together we go far”.

Minister PD and SI Prof Ahsan Iqbal chairs a meeting about 7th Population and Housing Census

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): “For a Transparent, Credible Census process and acceptability of Census results, it is important to address concerns of all provinces, especially Sindh” Minister PD and SI Prof Ahsan Iqbal directed Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) while chairing a meeting about 7th Population and Housing Census with Chief Minister Sindh Alongside, he requested Provincial functionary to cooperate with Pakistan Bureau of Statistics for smooth execution of Census Exercise by providing logistics and Human Resources Islamabad 15th March, 2023: A virtual meeting of Minister PD and SI, Prof Ahsan Iqbal, with CM Sindh was held at 10 am at Ministry of PD and SI.

The main purpose of meeting was to resolve the observations of Sindh Government over the ongoing Digital Census Exercise. Members from Sindh Cabinet and Senior officers from PBS, NDRA and NTC also attended the meeting. Mr. Muhammad Sarwar Gonadal, Member SSRM and Spokesperson of PBS updated the forum with the latest progress of Census activities and province wise position of important indicators.

He apprised about the problem faced in field, technical support provided through Census Support Centers and NADRA teams to Field staff, Management of Census work at head office through working groups, start of Computer assisted telephonic interviews (CATI) for data validation and quality, inclusion of internal migrants due to flood 2022, mechanism of counting of aliens and assurance of completion of work at Block level through Geo tagging.

The concerns raised by CM Sindh were provision of dashboards to Census District officers to validate that all the houses in a UCs are enumerated or not, verification of family members, a comprehensive mechanism to count flood affectees, an effective publicity campaign on main stream media and implementation of ring back tone with census message to aware general public.

Chief Census Commissioner, PBS, Dr Naeem uz Zafar, along with Member SSRM/ official spokesperson, PBS, Ms. Rabia Awan DDG, other senior officers of PBS and representatives from NADRA and NTC assured that all concerns of Sindh Government will be addressed. Access to dashboards has already been provided.

Digital Census is different from conventional as former is more transparent, efficient, and effective and it also enables real time progress monitoring. Provincial government’s access to monitoring will help in reducing the trust deficit and increasing ownership.

They further requested Sindh Government to cooperate for the smooth conduct of exercise. It was also requested that after resolving of highlighted issues it will become difficult to further bring any change in the running system.

“Census is an important exercise for allocation of resources and Policy making by Government. It provides basic data for implementation of development projects. Therefore, confidence building of all stake holders and their involvement from planning of census till finalization of results is important.

Provinces are important stakeholders in this process, therefore, all their reservations about the process must be addressed. Further, they must be given access to dashboards till Household level by showing aggregated information.

SMS gateway must be implemented for verification of Household members”, Minister PD and SI gave directions to PBS and collaborating partners.

He requested CM Sindh that cooperation from Sindh Government for provision of logistics and human resources is required to complete the enumeration process within given time frame. He shared that resolutions of issues will reduce the trust deficit of the province.

Chairman, senate of Pakistan, Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani’s message on the first International Day to Combat Islamophobia

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): Chairman, Senate of Pakistan, Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, has issued a message on the First International Day to combat Islamophobia. The Chairman has emphasized the need to address the growing issue of Islamophobia globally and work towards promoting religious harmony and understanding.

In his message, Chairman Sanjrani stated, “The First International Day to combat Islamophobia provides an opportunity for the international community to come together and address the alarming rise of hate crimes and discrimination against Muslims around the world.

We must take collective action to promote respect, tolerance, and understanding among different religions and cultures.” The Chairman further stressed the importance of building bridges among international communities and promoting interfaith dialogue as a means of countering Islamophobia.

He also called on the international community to take concrete steps to protect the rights of Muslims and ensure their safety and security. “As a country with a significant Muslim population, Pakistan remains committed promoting religious tolerance and understanding interfaith harmony”, he added.

The Chairman Senate reiterated that this day serves as a reminder that all nations must work together to combat Islamophobia and create a world where religious diversity and mutual respect are celebrated.

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf has said that the day of Golden Jubilee celebration of Senate indicates 50 years of Senate’s contribution to strengthening democracy and ensuring national cohesion. He said that this day also marked the achievements of parliamentary system and its contribution for development of country. He expressed these views while addressing the participants on the occasion of Golden Jubilee Celebration of Senate of Pakistan in Islamabad today.

While outlining the perspective and brief history of Senate, he expressed that it was 1973 Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan which came out with a second House named Senate.

He also added, “Provincial autonomy was the long demanded right of provinces brought about by the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, that gave a new and dynamic role to the Senate.” He also said that it was 18th Amendment which strengthened the Parliamentary democracy in country. While talking about the inclusion of senators in the Public Accounts committee (PAC), he said that it was also a historic development that had been achieved through systematic and consistent endeavours.

He also said, “A bicameral legislature has become the necessity of multicultural federations since it best satisfies the needs of the federating units by giving them equal representation to participate in legislation and accountability processes.”

While emphasizing the critical role offered by the Senate, he said that it had served a critical check on the power of the executive and had been instrumental in shaping legislative policies.

He said that this day also reflects on the past 50 years, we take pride in the Senate’s accomplishments in promoting democracy, transparency, and accountability. Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf paid tribute to all those who have served in the Senate of Pakistan over the past half a century, and to those who continue to serve in this august house.

He also said that this year also celebrates the Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, this truly is a momentous occasion for whole nation.

He paid heartfelt tribute to Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Under whose leadership, the Constitution of 1973 was drafted and adopted, which remains the supreme law of the land to this day. He added, “The Constitution enshrines the principles of democracy, federalism, and the rule of law, and provides for the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.”

The Speaker also said “Today, Pakistan stands at a crossroads of time. We are facing many challenges, but we also have many opportunities.” He suggested that let’s work together to take our country towards the light of hope, where progress, prosperity, and peace are possible as it was not time to rest on laurel.

He emphasized on working across party lines and personal interests. Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf also reiterated that commemoration of such events is of paramount importance, as it allows to reflect on shared history, celebrate achievements, and renew commitment to the values and principles that define Pakistani nation.
