9th Meeting of Organization of Islamic Cooperation Inter-Parliamentary Union begins in Tehran

Islamabad, February 18, 2014 (PPI-OT): The 9th Meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) started work in Tehran this morning. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, who had attended the inauguration ceremony, addressed the gathering in which 28 parliament speakers, 14 vice-speakers and 47 parliamentary delegations from Muslim states have participated in the IPU two-day meeting.

Chairman Senate Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari and Deputy Speaker National Assembly Murtaza Javed Abbasi who are leading Pakistan Parliamentary delegation met the Iranian President on the sidelines of the meeting. The President warmly welcomed Pakistani dignitaries and conveyed best regards to the leadership in Pakistan.

The President while highlighting importance of cementing relations between the two neighbours with common history, culture and religion shared his vision in furthering these ties. Both the new governments in Pakistan and Iran were looking forward to utilize their potential to enhance cooperation in the trade and economy to commensurate with the political goodwill. President Rouhani also conveyed concerns about the fate of five Iranian border guards.

The Chairman Senate while thanking the President for his warm sentiments towards Pakistan, its leadership and people remarked that Pakistan shared his vision to focus on enhanced cooperation in trade and economy and for road map to achieve it. The Chairman Senate assured the President that concerned agencies in Pakistan were intensively engaged for locating the Iranian border guards.

The Chairman Senate also met Dr Ali Larijani, the Speaker of the Iranian Majlis and exchanged ideas for promoting parliamentary exchange. He also met Mr. M.H Nejad Hossoinian, Secretary General, APA to discuss matters related to the Asian Parliamentary Assembly. Chairman Senate is the current President of APA.
