United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority to establish Investment Promotion Unit
Lahore, October 22, 2013 (PPI-OT): Steering Committee of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) held a meeting today at the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) head office to review the “Joint UNIDO-SMEDA-Italia program” to establish an Investment Promotion Unit (IPU) in Lahore with emphasis on Italian Investment in Pakistan. The meeting was chaired by Sardar Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera, Chief Executive Officer, SMEDA being head of the host country’s counterpart agency.
From UNIDO, a five-member team of experts led by Ms. Monica Carco, Unit Chief Investment and Technology Unit attended the meeting. Other members of the team included UNIDO Headquarters experts; Mr. Brian Portell, Mr. Dino Fortunato, Mr. Domenico Bruzzone, Director, Overseas Technical Unit, Italian Development Cooperation based in Islamabad and his Financial Expert Dr. Antonio Piccinni.
On behalf of the Government of Pakistan, Mr. Muhammad Ashfaq Ghumman, Joint Secretary Ministry of Industries and Production and Mr. Zafar Yab Khan, Deputy Secretary Economic Affairs Division attended the meeting.
The Steering Committee discussed the work plan of the said program for the period of 2013-2014 and granted approval for its implementation. The meeting also decided to precede the program by conducting two awareness seminars. The first seminar will be held on October 25, 2013 and the second seminar would be held on October 28, 2013 on SMEs’ access to finance.
The UNIDO steering Committee was informed on this occasion that the project; “Joint UNIDO-SMEDA-Italia program to establish an IPU in Lahore was originally started in February 2006. But, due to increased security risk in Pakistan in the year 2009, the project operation was interrupted.
The project was, however, reviewed in a meeting held between UNIDO and the Italian authorities at UNIDO Headquarters in March 2011, which decided to resume and extend the project until end of 2014.
Earlier, Sardar Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera, Chief Executive Officer, SMEDA delivered address of welcome to the participants and apprised them about the five year SME Development Plan evolved by SMEDA.
He expressed deep gratitude to UNIDO and Italian government officials for setting up Investment Unit in Pakistan. He assured of the fullest cooperation and commitment of SMEDA to make the proposed IPU successful.
