Campaign against tobacco use in Islamabad from May 19

Islamabad, May 17, 2015 (PPI-OT): Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) is starting campaign to make the city `smoke free’ from May 19 which would continue till June 4. According to details, ITP is launching this campaign in coordination with Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) Health wing and people will be educated about anti-smoking laws.

During this campaign, banners would be placed at prominent places of the city while pamphlets and other material among the public and transporters would be distributed to aware them about hazards of smoking and anti-tobacco laws.

SSP (Traffic) Malik Matloob has said that ITP) will make complete coordination with the authorities to ensure implementation on tobacco control laws through educating road users and effectively conducting checking in public transport.

During this campaign, SSP (Traffic) Malik Matloob, SP Khalid Rasheed, SP Ilyas Hashmi, DG Health CADD Dr. Minhaj us Siraj, Director ITP FM Radio Ayesha Jameel and In-Charge Education Team of ITP Rana Ishtiaq would brief public in various phases.

The SSP (Traffic) said that public will be given awareness on ban of tobacco use in public transport as well as public places and also about hazards of tobacco use, by making announcements by Education Wing and Radio FM 92.4 of ITP.

He said meetings would be also arranged with office bearers of transporters’ unions to ensure no smoking in transport. The SSP said that according to Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smokers Health Ordinance, 2002, smoking is illegal in public places and public transport.
