Chairman Senate Message on Labour Day

Islamabad, April 30, 2019 (PPI-OT): Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani in his special message on Labour Day has expressed hope that Pakistan will soon experience progress in the standard of living of the labour class. He has called for a mechanism to consistently and regularly increase the minimum wages of skilled and unskilled labourers to add to the lives in view of the soaring inflation rates.

Chairman Senate has observed that Labour Day is an international holiday honouring the struggles of the working class and efforts of labour unions. There are a number of issues that have to be addressed and resolved in order to provide for a decent life worth living for the labourers.

Providing one day holiday in not an apt tribute to our labourers but is an attempt to reaffirm our commitment and resolve that if we want progress in our country, we need to take steps which will increase productivity. This will only happen when we attempt to increase the satisfaction level of the workers. This can be achieved by providing substantial pay structure, workplace safety and promise of a good life.

Labour struggle and issues in Pakistan receive little attention. Pakistan is a signatory to International Labour Organisations’ conventions and hence requires fulfilment of its obligations. We can and must do something to reduce the plight of labourers.
