Commissioner Karachi orders arrest of illegal hydrants’ owners in Korangi Industrial Area

Karachi: Commissioner Karachi, Roshan Ali Shaikh has ordered immediate closure of illegal hydrants running in Korangi Industrial Area (KIA) and arrest of their owners.

In a meeting with the office bearers of Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) on Thursday, the Commissioner has also prohibited Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to issue any permit for the hydrant in KIA without his approval.

The Commissioner has further ordered the area Assistant Commissioner to have a meeting with senior management of the National and Attock Refineries and remove all their encroachments and heavy vehicles from the KIA especially from Road 5000 leading to Tannery Zone. He further instructed that if the order would not be complied, the officer concerned of Attock refinery should also be arrested.

The Commissioner has suggested that KATI and KITE Ltd should form a committee and prepare a plan to take over the development and other plans of KIA on the pattern of SITE Ltd so that KIA could be handled in a proper way. He advised that Kia stakeholders should prepare a master plan of the area in a legal framework and submit to him for further action.

Mian Zahid Hussain asked the Commissioner to issue KATI an approval to impose and collect levy for various services to be provided in the area. He further asked the Commissioner to issue an authorization to charge for parking in KIA so that proceeds could be utilized on maintenance and repairs of the roads.

Roshan Shaikh said that KATI and KITE should initiate projects in KIA for self generation of revenue. He advised the KATI to appoint a consultant for such projects and land escaping in the area. He told the meeting that a third landfill site for disposal of solid waste has been demarcated already.

As PTA Chief Khurshid Ahmed requested the Commissioner to implement the decisions made in the meeting with Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan including removal of solid waste, operation against encroachments, repairs and construction of road network and water supply to the Tannery Zone, etc.

The Commissioner said that swift action is being taken in this regard. Mian Zahid also pointed out that KATI has planned to install close circuit cameras in KIA for security and surveillance to make KIA as secured industrial zone. He asked the Commissioner to issue authorization to KATI to collect levy for the project and its running cost. Zahid further suggested naming KIA’s two main arteries after S M Muneer and Gulzar Firoz in recognition of their services for the industry.
