Karachi, January 19, 2015 (PPI-OT): The European Union has granted duty free market access to Pakistan under the GSP Plus for a period of 10 years w.e.f. 1st January 2014. Under GSP+, 6269 tariff lines have duty free access to the EU markets covering 96 percent of products to the EU by Pakistan. We are the second country in the entire South and South East Asian Region to have duty free access to European Union and Pakistan has 10% to 14% duty advantage viz a viz its competitors in textile and clothing sectors.
2. The key advantages of GSP+ are to help reduce poverty and promote good governance besides sustainable development. By the grace of Allah, the targets of GSP Plus for first year have been achieved and export of Pakistan to EU Region has jumped by 20% in first nine months of 2014 from US$ 4.7 billion to US$ 5.7 billion in the corresponding period of last year.
3. Besides offering huge opportunities, the GSP Plus has also challenged us to implement the 27 UN conventions. Government of Pakistan, with the assistance of various International Donor Agencies like TRTA (UNIDO), CBI and PUM etc have taken various initiatives to maximize benefits from GSP Plus and to fulfil its criterion involving all stakeholders in Public and Private sectors.
Treaty Implementation Cell (TIC) is established. TDAP and SMEs are working closely with International Donor Agencies for the capacity building. GOP has taken initiatives to address the law and order situation and also various projects are in pipeline to fill the gap of energy shortage.
