Jerusalem (IINA) Chairman of the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission Issa Qaraqe said that more than 1,500 prisoners held in Israeli jails will launch an open-ended hunger strike on Monday.
Qaraqe considered the collective hunger strike as disobedience and rebellion against the occupation’s oppression and its practices and laws.
Speaking to Radio Mawtini on Sunday, Qaraqe said the decision of the strike came after the failure of dialogues and discussions of the prisoners with the so-called “management of detention centers” to improve their situation. He pointing out that these detainees are prisoners of war and defenders of the cause of their people as well as their dignity and right to freedom.
The chairman of the commission added that this strike is particularly important, given the fact that it is led by MP Marwan Barghouti, a member of Fatah Central Committee, and a number of prisoners participating in it. He confirmed the insistence of the prisoners to proceed with their hunger strike until their rights are secured.
He warned the Israeli occupation authorities against the use of the law allowing force-feeding of prisoners and suppression against the prisoners of war, or any other techniques to mount pressure on them.
Qaraqe called on local, Arab and international human rights institutions to act on the international level to support the prisoners in providing legal protection to them in light of targeting the rights of the prisoners by the occupation authorities.
