Islamabad, September 06, 2013 (PPI-OT): A four members-United Nations Development Program UNDP delegation headed by Mr. Marc-André Franche, Country Director along with Ms. Tracy Vienings, Deputy Country Director (Programmes), Ms. Rabia Khattak, Assistant Country Director (CPR Unit) and Mr. Hidayat Khan, Programme Office (CPR Unit) visited NDMA to brief and discuss their DRR initiatives/activities for Disaster Management System in Pakistan.
Major General Saeed Aleem, Chairman NDMA while welcoming the delegation, briefed about the recent flood situation in the country. He also informed the meeting on government response in handling the floods and relief activities initiated by NDMA in the flood affected areas.
Mr. Marc-André Franche, Country Director UNDP appreciated NDMA efforts in disaster management across the country and also for contribution and support to UNDP in identifying priority activities to support Disaster Management Plan DMP.
Mr. Hadayat Khan, Program Officer (CPR Unit) UNDP gave detailed briefing on UNDP’s future project proposals by linking them with priorities identified in NDMP 2012-2022.
While presenting proposal on Mapping of Government Buildings, he informed that UNDP intended to analyze vulnerability of important government buildings which are prone to various disasters and UNDP plans to carrying out assessment through satellite imageries and field visits in consultation with provincial and district authorities.
UNDP delegation briefed about the future UNDP Early Recovery Plan focusing on the areas of intervention including Government Functioning, Skill Development through Job, Business Recovery and Community Energy Solutions in Pakistan in near future for timely and effective response to the humanitarian needs of people likely to be affected from natural disasters.
Major General Saeed Aleem, Chairman NDMA appreciated the efforts of UNDP in the times of disaster in Pakistan and also highlighted the need to strengthen Early Warning System and translate warnings into useful information to ensure timely dissemination of information at the community level. He also assured extending every possible assistance by NDMA for UNDP projects.
