Function held at Greenwich University to commemorate Defence Day of Pakistan

Karachi, September 09, 2013 (PPI-OT): A function was held at Greenwich University in DHA Seaview Township to commemorate the Defence Day of Pakistan in which the speakers paid homage to the martyrs who laid down their lives during Sept 1965 Indo-Pak War defending the country. Administrator DHA Brig Muhammad Abdullah was the chief guest of the ceremony while a war veteran of 1965 war Lt. Gen (R) Jahanzeb Arbab was the guest of honour.

The students of the University presented a very inspiring programme on the occasion in which innovative documentaries prepared by them on our war heroes were shown while the university band presented patriotic national songs of that period.

The speakers stressed the need to rekindle the patriotic fervour of Sept 1965 War in the nation for confronting the new and far more serious challenges posed to the existence of the country today from the militants, extremists and fanatics.

Brig Abdullah paid tribute to the armed forces and the people of Pakistan who during the 1965 war stood as one against a many times larger enemy. He said our armed forces imbued with a patriotic spirit rendered supreme sacrifices and laid down their lives so that we live in safety and honour. He added that the examples of valour and courage setup by the armed forces were unparalleled.

Lt. Gen (R) Jahanzeb Arbab said that our valiant Defence Forces not only gallantly fought with enemy three times the size but also gave them an exemplary defeat. He recounted the courageous acts of his infantry battalion which he was commanding then at Sulemanki sector and described how his regiment penetrated deep into the Indian Territory with remarkable success and captured a sizeable area of India.

Sister of Major Shabbir Shareef Shaheed (Nishan Haider), brother of late Air Cdre MM Alam who shot down five Indian Hunter planes in a minute on 7 Sept 1965 at Sargodha and created a world record and brother of Maj Aale Ahmed Shaheed also spoke on the occasion.

Ms Seema Mughal, Vice Chancellor Greenwich University said that important national days were organized at the University as part of students’ grooming so that students could get real inspiration and motivation from the glorious acts and deeds of our ancestors. The programme ended on prayers for the prosperity and solidarity of Pakistan.
