Gawkadal massacre important event in Kashmir history: Malik

Srinagar, January 19, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik, has described Gaw Kadal massacre as an important event in the political history of Kashmir.Mohammad Yasin Malik in a statement issued in Srinagar said that on 21st January 1990 hundreds of innocent unarmed Kashmiris endured the bullets of Indian troops and started a people’s revolution against Indian illegal occupation on their homeland.

He said that on 21st January 1990, people in Lakhs came out of their houses and marched for Azadi and started the biggest people’s revolution in 5,000-year-old history of Jammu and Kashmir.

“The only purpose of these brutal massacres was to end or defeat the people’s revolution in the territory but by the grace of Allah till date India has failed to succeed in their efforts and the people’s revolution still continues and will continue till success,” the JKLF Chairman added.

It is worth mentioning here that on the intervening night of January 20 and 21, 1990, Indian troops molested several women during house-to-house searches in Chota Bazar area of Srinagar. The incident took place immediately after Jagmohan Malhotra took over as Governor of the occupied territory on 19th January, 1990, and announced to deal sternly with those who would demand freedom from India.

As the word about the molestation of the women spread in the morning, thousands of people took to the streets in the city to protest against the brutal action of the troops. The occupation forces resorted to indiscriminate firing on the protesters in Gaw Kadal area of the city, killing over 50 people and injuring hundreds of others.

Muhammad Yasin Malik also called for complete shutdown in the territory on 26th January, the Republic Day of India.
