Srinagar, August 09, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the mental health care in local hospitals has taken hit due to the dearth of psychiatrists despite manifold increase in the psychiatric disorder cases due to increase in oppression and repression in the territory since the BJP-led Hindu extremist government took power in New Delhi.

An official at the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) told media in Srinagar that mental health; an integral part of health sector had been left handicapped due to the shortage of manpower including psychiatrists in the face of increasing causes of psychiatric cases stemming from brutal Indian occupation of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to health experts, nocturnal raids, surprise crackdowns by Indian forces, cordon and search operations, poor awareness, myths of stigma and lack of knowledge about treatment leads to a high treatment gap. The mental hospital is grappling with the shortage of doctors and paramedics staff which compromises the care of the mentally ill people who visit the facility from far off places.
