Economic crackdown on IOK media denounced

Srinagar, April 07, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani has strongly condemned the economic crackdown on local media, particularly some newspapers by Indian authorities in the territory.

Syed Ali Gilani in a statement issued in Srinagar said that throttling and curbing the media houses was part of the vast game plan and those thumping the chest to uphold the fourth pillar of democracy were themselves the architects of the undemocratic assault on media. He said, “Like every institution media people in IOK too have a strenuous and suffocating environment to carry out their professional duties and they too have been facing a double edged sword from the last so many decades.”

Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir Chairman, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai has demanded of the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to take a step forward and appoint a special representative on Kashmir to explore a viable solution to the lingering dispute. He urged the international community to come to the rescue of the humanity, which is getting killed in the occupied territory, every now and then.

The Hurriyat forum led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at its executive committee meeting in Srinagar, today, strongly condemned the sending of the third summons to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by the National Investigation Agency. The meeting, which was chaired by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said that the Chairman was being deliberately harassed and an effort was being made to criminalize the Hurriyat leadership for its political stand. Islamic scholars and clerics from across the Kashmir valley in a statement also expressed anguish over the continued harassment of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by the NIA through repeated notices.

Meanwhile, complete shutdown was observed, today, in Ganderbal district against the killing of a local student. All shops and other business establishments were closed while the traffic was off the road. The troops were deployed in strength at all sensitive points to prevent anti-India protests. The martyred student, identified as Rahil Rashid Sheikh, an M.Tech student, was martyred by the troops during a cordon and search operation at Padguchi in Imam Sahib area of Shopian district, yesterday.

Thousands of people, today, participated in the funeral prayers of martyred student Rahil Rashid Sheikh in Nunar area of Ganderbal district. Chanting pro-freedom and pro-Islam slogans, the mourners marched with the body of the martyr from his residence to the local graveyard where he was laid to rest.

The India’s infamous National Investigation Agency has summoned Dr Naeem Gilani, son of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani, to its New Delhi office in the name of questioning in a fake case on Tuesday. India is using NIA to harass the Kashmiri leadership.

The Chairman of Kashmir Council Europe, Ali Raza Syed in a statement in Brussels sought the intervention by the international community including the European Union and the United Nations for implementation of the UN resolutions on Kashmir. He praised All Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir for supporting right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people.
