Karachi: Governor of Sindh and Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan on Sunday evening announced substantial raise in the salary packages for doctors, nurses and paramedical staff associated with the provincial government’s hospitals.
Addressing the second convocation of DUHS, he also announced raise in the stipends for house officers and junior doctors undergoing post-graduate training programmes.
“Government has already accepted the recommendations of the committee comprising ministers and officials associated with provincial health and finance ministries as well as vice chancellors of different public sector medical universities,” said Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan.
He said the recommendations will be essential part of the budget for 2011-2012 and the raise would be materialized under forth-coming fiscal year.
He said that health care system was in a state of evolution and government was committed to make it not only affordable but also accessible to all, with due care towards quality.
He appreciated the role of medical institutions in assisting the government to achieve its objectives by producing good doctors with their academic and research activities.
“It is essential for us to ensure that the investment of country into our education should well return to the society,” said the Sindh Governor.
Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan on the occasion congratulated the graduates and their parents.
He lauded the efforts of honour holders and reminded all graduates of the responsibility that has been placed on their shoulders as medical practitioners.
He also appreciated the efforts of Vice Chancellor-DUHS Prof. Hameed Khan and his faculty members for measures to upgrade the university.
Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Minister for Health, Dr. Sagheer Ahmed said that doctors, nurses and other para-medical staff were the backbone of health care system and quality of health care cannot be possible without nurses.
Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice-Chancellor-DUHS recounted the progress of the University since its inception. He highlighted the developments of the University since its inception.
He said DUHS established in 2003 with three constituent institutions has now 40 constituent institutions.
He said the vision and mission of DUHS has been focused on three domains that include academic excellence, human resource development and community healthcare.
The University since its inception had focussed to provide maximum possible health services to the community through various ways.
He advised the graduates to keep high standards of medical profession in their house job and future medical practice.
On the occasion over 1,300 graduates belonging to different disciplines received their degrees and shields.
The recipients included graduates of MBBS, BDS, Nursing and Medical Technology and postgraduates of various disciplines for the year 2010 and 2011.
The ceremony was also attended by dignitaries, academic council members, teacher and parents of the students.
Earlier, Governor of Sindh distributed gold medals, certificates and shields among the honour holders.
