Indian Air Force to Equip Helicopter Crews with New, Lighter Bulletproof Jackets

Chandigarh, The Indian Air Force (IAF) has announced plans to provide its helicopter crews with new bulletproof jackets that are lighter and designed for enhanced comfort during flights, especially when conducting cordon and search operations and internal security duties.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the IAF is currently collaborating with the industry to develop jackets that are not only lighter but also offer sufficient protection from small arms fire during both flight and ground combat survival scenarios. The current jackets, weighing 6.5 kg, have been described as bulky and cumbersome, making them difficult to wear while flying. They also require a separate tactical vest to carry ammunition and survival equipment.

The new design aims for a weight limit of 4 kg for flight operations and 8 kg for ground combat survival, with Level 3+ ballistic protection. This protection level is designed to shield against various types of bullets, including those from 7.62 mm rifles such as the AK-47, fired from distances as close as 25 meters. Each crew member engaged in such operations will be equipped with one of these new jackets.

The need for improved protective gear is highlighted by the dangers faced by helicopter crews during operations against pro-liberation groups and in tasks like anti-Naxal operations, where the risk of ground fire is significant. The IAF regularly operates in such high-risk environments.

The proposed jacket will feature a dual-component design: an inner jacket providing front and side protection for use during flight and an outer shell with additional storage pockets and all-around torso protection for use during ground engagements if a helicopter is downed.

The design also considers the Indian climate and aims to ensure the jackets do not restrict the mobility of the aircrew, allowing for effective maneuverability during both flying and combat survival scenarios. Additionally, the materials used will have flame retardant properties.
