Karachi, August 18, 2014 (PPI-OT): The Chairman of FPCCI Standing Committee on Customs Saquib Fayyaz Magoon said that the importers were suffering from huge operational and financial losses due to inordinate delay in slow handling of containers and examination of goods at KICT.
“This creates unnecessary shortage and interruption in smooth supply of raw materials to the industry and consumer goods on the one hand and make the commercial and industrial importers suffer from demurrage and detention charges etc., on the other hand”, he elaborated.
He informed that last month a delegation of FPCCI Standing Committee on Customs visited Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT) and held a joint meeting with the officials of customs and office bearers of KICT wherein, the problems being faced by the trade and industry due to congestion at terminal mainly because of mismanagement and inefficiency of their ground staff were discussed and the KICT representatives assured FPPCI that they would take necessary remedial measures to improve the efficiency and that the things would become better in future.
“However, beside KICT assurance no improvement is seen in its working and as on today, still 400 to 500 number of containers are lying pending for examination at KICT and the situation is not much different at PICT as well” he added.
Mr. Shabbir Mansha, Co-Chairman of FPCCI Standing Committee on Customs proposed to prescribe a deadline for grounding the containers and asked the terminal operators to increase the number of efficient and trained staff and ensure swift handling of containers within the stipulated time period.
Mr. Khurram Ijaz, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee identified that high percentage of marking of goods for examination is also one of the main reasons for the delay in clearance of GDs and therefore, urged to reduce it.
