Information and Communication Technologies have deep impact on our lives: Minister

Islamabad, May 17, 2013 (PPI-OT): While chairing a ceremony held here to mark the 148th World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, Federal Minister for Information technology Dr Sania Nishtar said that ICTs have a deep impact on all aspects our lives.

Technological advancements in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have created numerous opportunities for people around the world. ICTs drive trade, education, health and other social activities that enhance living standards of our people.

The Minister said that today’s economy is knowledge based and Telecom sector is playing a very crucial role in it. She remarked that we are in need of an economy as well as industry based on ICT’s. The Minister said that telecom sector is a flourishing sector in Pakistan and we need to focus more on it.

Dr. Sania also commented on this year’s theme of World Telecom Day. She emphasized that Road Safety is the need of the hour and we all should be careful about it. She said that Road safety was a global concern not only for public health and injury prevention but also to improve efficiencies in traffic management.

The need of the day was to develop state-of-the-art ICT standards for Intelligent Transport Systems and driver safety that utilize a combination of computers, communications, positioning and automation technologies for avoidance of any mishap and optimizing driving performance by eliminating unsafe technology-related distractions while driving.

Concluding her address, the Minister thanked all the participants and dignitaries for their presence there and encouraged all to generate more and more awareness among the masses about the importance of this important theme.

Secretary Information Technology Muhammad Ijaz Mian, Walid Irshad President and CEO PTCL, SSP NH and MP and Secretary Education were also present on the occasion and they addressed the audience to generate maximum awareness about the theme.
