It has been wrongly reported in a section of press that voters for Presidential Election will have to put “Tick Mark” or “OK” on ballot paper against name of the candidate of his choice

Islamabad, July 29 2013 (PPI-OT): It has been wrongly reported in a section of press that the voters (Members of the Senate, National and the four Provincial Assemblies) for the Presidential Election will have to put “Tick Mark” or “OK” etc. on the ballot paper against the name of the candidate of his choice.

In this regard, it is clarified that as per Presidential Election Rules-1988, the voters after receiving the ballot paper, are required to proceed to the place reserved for marking the ballot paper with a Cross-Mark i-e (X ) against the name of a candidate of their choice and no other mark. After putting the Cross-Mark with the pencil provided for the purpose, the voter has to fold the ballot paper and insert it in the ballot box without undue delay.

Attention of the respected voters is also invited to Section 16 of the Second Schedule [Article 41(3)] of the Constitution of Pakistan which provides that:

16- A ballot paper shall be invalid if:–

(i) there is upon it any name, word or mark, by which the person voting may be identified; or

(ii) it does not contain the initials of the Presiding Officer; or

(iii) it does not contain a mark; or

(iv) a mark is placed against the names of two or more candidates: or

(v) there is any uncertainty as to the identity of the candidate against whose name the mark is placed.
