JKLF leaders subjected to force; Yasin, others injured

Srinagar, April 06, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, several leaders of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front including the party Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik, were injured when Indian police subjected them to brute force near Palhallan in Pattan.

The JKLF spokesman in a statement issued in Srinagar said that Muhammad Yasin Malik and other party leaders were on their way to Baramulla to address a gathering in connection with the election boycott campaign when the police intercepted them near Palhallan.

He said that the police attacked the JKLF caravan with canes and sticks injuring Yasin Malik and more than a dozen persons. He said that the police later arrested Yasin Malik, Mushtaq Ajmal, Shameem Hussein, Shahid Makaya, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Muhammad Habibullah and Yasir Maqbool and shifted them to some unknown place.

“Several JKLF activists and leaders have been injured in police action and many of them have been rushed to the hospital. Besides Malik, the injured included Imtiyaz Ahmed, Showkat Ahmed Dar, Ashfaq Hussain, Salman Ahmed, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Shahid Makaya, Arshid Ahmed, Owais Ahmed Khan, Aadil Ahmed and Muhammad Haroon,” the spokesman said, adding that the police also damaged several vehicles that were part of the caravan.

The spokesman said that as the news of assault on JKLF leaders and their arrest reached Baramulla, people in large numbers came out on streets and staged demonstrations against the police action. He said that raising high-pitched anti-India and pro-liberation slogans, the people marched from Tawheed Ganj to Bus Stand.

The spokesman said that the JKLF leaders, Showkat Ahmad Bakhshi, Sheikh Abdul Rasheed, Mir Siraj-ud-Din Dawood, Professor Javed and Bashir Ahmad Kashmiri addressing the protesters on the occasion condemned the assault on party leaders and their arrest. They urged the people to stay away from farcical elections as these polls were just a tool to oppress the people of Kashmir.
