Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s President has emphasized that industrialization and enhancing exports is the imperative solution to uplift the economy

Karachi, September 04, 2013 (PPI-OT): Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s President Muhammad Haroon Agar has emphasized that industrialization and enhancing exports is the imperative solution to uplift the economy. For the larger interest of the country and its citizens, public and private sector harmony and coordination is crucial and unavoidable to strengthen the frail economy.

Exchanging views with Chief Executive Officer of National Industrial Parks Development and Management Company, Govt. of Pakistan Mohsin Syed, he stated that the present seven industrial zones in Karachi lack infrastructural facilities of proper roads, railway linkage and other basic amenities like energy, gas, water etc.

The industrial policy framework should focus on improving industrial competitiveness, especially with regard to industrial enterprises be they small, medium or large. It is generally acknowledged that the Government cannot fully control industrial development nor can it be involved in direct productive activities.

However, the Government, in consultation with the private sector can formulate policies; pursue such policies, and through regular reviews and analysis of industrial trends and performance, make policy adjustments.

He urged the Government to improve the operating environment for private domestic and foreign investments and sustainable industrial development; improve competitiveness and enhance productivity through macro-economic management and industrial governance and by ensuring that the basic physical infrastructure, capital resources, human resources and knowledge resources are adequately developed and are of relevance to industrial development and competitiveness.

He stated that diversification of economic activities and industrial production is crucial. Major constraints and impediments to industrial development such as, administrative bottlenecks relating to the provision of government services, red tape and time delays, tax administration, commercial laws, labour relations etc. must be controlled. He appreciated establishment of Korangi Creek and Bin Qasim Industrial Parks in Karachi.

Chief Executive Officer of National Industrial Parks Development and Management Company Mohsin Syed stated that National Industrial Parks Development and Management Company (NIP) was operating under the ambit of the Ministry of Production , Government of Pakistan. NIP is a public-private partnership established to develop focused industrial growth in Pakistan by developing world-class industrial parks all over the country. NIP’s Board of Directors include Board members are from the private sector as well as the public sector.

He apprised that NIP aims to support rapid industrialization in the country by establishing new industrial parks and take necessary steps in attracting industrialists for setting up their businesses in the industrial parks. NIP is also promoting interaction between the industrialists and the government so to create an overall conducive industrial environment and provide a platform and act as a catalyst for industries to increase productivity.

He informed that all the Industrial Parks are power load shedding free having their own power generation facility. So far six industrial parks were existing including Korangi Creek and Bin Qasim in Karachi, Khairpur special zone in Sindh, and Rachna industrial park and Marble City in Risalpur. Twenty more were also planned across Pakistan.

He highlighted that the industrial parks were developing as Special Economic Zones which are planned to be connected with all major cities of Pakistan via Railway link. The ownership of land is maintained with the province while the industrial parks are being operated by NIP. He invited the President KCCI to compose a delegation to visit the Korangi Creek and Bin Qasim Industrial Park which he accepted.
