Karachi Port Trust Witnesses 25% Growth in Cargo in FY21

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) achieved notable growth in cargo handling in the past eleven months, said Minister for Maritime Affairs, Ali Haider Zaidi.

The latest data by Karachi Port Trust shows a 25.71 percent increase in cargo from July 2020 to May 2021, as well as a 13.6 percent growth in container handling and a 21.3 percent increase in ship movement.

Cargo volumes at Port Qasim also increased by 12.65 percent during the same period.

This shows robust economic activity in the country, the minister said, adding that Pakistan is on the rise and that this improvement also depicts that the country is on the right track.

In May 2021, the Karachi Port Trust released data showing Rs. 602 million in savings from administrative and operating expenditures owing to prudent financial management and effective use of resources while cutting costs.

The minister had also announced earlier that after the Port Qasim Authority, a new Management Information System would also be established at the Karachi Port Trust.

The government is aiming to ensure transparency in all ministries through the use of technology and all organizations under the Maritime Affairs ministry are also set to be digitized. New staff for the department will be recruited, the minister informed.
