A two-day conference of religious scholars to discuss measures for restoration of peace in Afghanistan has begun in Jeddah.

Addressing the opening session, Secretary General of Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Yousuf al-Othaimeen said the conference is being held at a sensitive time in Afghanistan's history.

He hoped that the event would serve to facilitate Afghanistan's foundering reconciliation process and put an end to terrorism and violent extremism in the country, which he described as contrary to the traditions and teachings of Islam.

The two-day conference is being attended by more than 100 prominent Muslim scholars from Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Egypt, Sudan and Morocco.

The final declaration will be issued from Makkah's Al-Safa Palace tomorrow.
