Minister Zahid Hamid lauds high research quality being carried out at National Centre for Physics

Islamabad, October 15, 2014 (PPI-OT): Mr. Zahid Hamid Federal Minister of Science and Technology lauded the high research quality being carried out at National Centre for Physics (NCP) during his visit to the outfit. The Minister along with Mr. Kamran Ali Qureshi, Secretary for Ministry of science and Technology visited National Centre for Physics and had a tour to its research facilities.

The Minister appreciated the stat of the art user oriented facilities of NCP. Dr. Hafeez Hoorani Director General NCP gave detailed briefing to Minister about running scientific project being carried out by NCP. Dr. Hoorani briefed him about NCP projects in fields of Agriculture, energy, bio diesel and medicines. The honourable Minister showed great interest in equipment and laboratories of NCP.

Briefing about the European Organization of Nuclear Research (CERN) project Dr. Hoorani told that “Pakistan is already contributing to CERN projects including designing detection technology and providing personnel support for the LHC’s maintenance and Associate membership of Pakistan with CERN could take the level of collaboration up a notch.

High-energy physicists and engineers from Pakistan mainly from the Pakistan Atomic energy Commission (PAEC), NUST, CIIT, GIKI, QAU and National Centre for Physics (NCP) have been participating in experiments at CERN since 1994. The physics group from NCP joined the CMS experiment in 1999 contributing hardware for this experiment and manufacturing of RPC indigenously, making major contributions to core hardware and participating in important physics analyses including Higgs discovery.

The Minister visited the Grid Node Facility of NCP. Dr. Hoorani told that the NCP had become an LHC Computing Grid node in 2004, which enabled it to receive data from LHC experiments. Researchers will gain access to an invaluable learning component that cannot be learnt anywhere else with the help of grid node data.

Prior to this Minister held a detailed meeting with Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad (N.I, H.I., S.I.) Chairman BoG of NCP. Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad briefed about the establishment and vision of NCP. He told the minister the centre is being working on the lines of International.
