Mrs. Ameena Saiyid, OBE, Managing Director of Oxford University Press, in her inaugural speech at SPELT’s 27th International Conference, thanked Prof. Zakia Sarwar and SPELT for providing an opportunity for exchange and generation of new and viable ideas, and commented on the vitality and optimism of SPELT’s annual conferences.
She stressed the importance of the teachers’ role in Pakistan today and the difference a trained teacher can make to education. The knowledge-based world demands continuing education hence teachers were advised to enhance their capacity and become life-long learners.

The conflicts which envelope the world can be countered through the spread of knowledge, she said, giving the very inspiring examples of Sir Syed who after the events of 1857 urged the Muslims to acquire education to achieve respect and status, and Quaid-e-Azam who took this advice and used his education to wrest freedom for his people and create a new state, Pakistan.
Reiterating OUP’s longstanding support for SPELT, Mrs Saiyid concluded with reference to OUP’s contribution to education in the form of quality books, textbooks, teaching resources and supplementary readers.
