Minister for Planning, Development and Reform articulates case of Pakistan as a prospective economy at Harvard and Yale Universities
Boston, November 12, 2013 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Reform, Prof Ahsan Iqbal has said, the PML(N) government believes through Collaborative Governance, we can put Pakistan on path of rapid growth. Public sector has deteriorated significantly due to the administrative changes made during the autocratic regime of the past.
The Minister further highlighted, “Public sector, Private sector, and Academia partnership trio can solve our problems”. The Minister said , “Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world and located at the most strategic geo-political fault line in the world. By making Pakistan a hub of regional integration through regional connectivity projects we can create a new market covering 3 billion people in Asia comprising South Asia, China, and Central Asia with great opportunities for global economy; he was delivering lectures at top US universities of Harvard and Yale.
The Minister pointed out, “Pakistan is misreported by media and is a victim of negative perceptions. The reality is that Pakistan is making solid progress on democratic transition with growing rule of law and independent judiciary, independent media, and consensus on constitutionalism.
There is growing and engaging civil society in Pakistan. The government is preparing Pakistan 2025 Programme which will transform Pakistan into a knowledge economy and take it to upper middle income countries ranking”.
Prof. Ahsan Iqbal said, “In the past social and human capital was neglected, but now our focus is to fully harnesses the human potential as Pakistan is gifted with young population. Government has launched public sector reform Programme to change the orientation of government departments towards citizen service and performance delivery.
Government officials and departments will be evaluated on the basis of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). We have to adopt up or out approach. Either people move performance up or go out to make way for younger professionals. We plan to use bio technology in development of the economy, and leading Pakistani professionals in USA have volunteered to help in this area”.
The Federal Minister said, “Pakistan 2025 Programme will develop strong knowledge links with leading universities and research centers of the world to benefit from leading edge research. We will make data open for researchers, businesses, and technology entrepreneurs to make citizen applications. The government has zero tolerance for corruption and clear focus on reviving the economy.
The security challenge is being addressed on priority basis. The ethnic, sectarian, and linguistic violence are legacy of dictatorships. There is no room for militancy in the country and we want to create a society where all Pakistanis regardless of faith, color, or language can live in peace and harmony. This was the vision of Quaid e Azam and we believe in his vision.”
