Islamabad, February 11, 2014 (PPI-OT): Media can be an effective tool in further strengthening bilateral ties between Pakistan and US. Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Federal Minister for IB and NH said this in a meeting with US media delegation under auspices of ICFJ today in Islamabad.
He said that Pakistan highly values its ties with US as it considers this relationship as an important component of Pakistan’s foreign policy. Pakistan would further like to enhance its relationship with US, but on the basis of mutual trust and mutual respect, the Minister asserted.
Senator Pervaiz Rashid said that the recent visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to US which he paid on the invitation of President Obama marked the commitment of both sides to advance shared interests to the mutual benefit.
He said that Pakistan has rendered great sacrifices in the war against terror and those must be duly recognized. The Minister also emphasized on the need of exchange of visits between media persons for better understanding of countries, experiences and best practices.
He said that Pakistan has passed through its transitional phase from authoritarian state to a democratic one. Now media is free to act as a watchdog, judiciary is fully independent and civil society is highly dynamic to protect the interest of the people, the Minister added. It is for the first time that people’s access to information is guaranteed constitutionally which will pave the way to ensure transparency and improve governance in the country, the Minister emphasized
He further said that Pakistan highly appreciates the contribution of US economic assistance in supporting Pakistani’s development efforts. The delegation was headed by Mr. Babar Taimur, Programme Director ICFJ. The delegation appreciated the level of independence provided to media in Pakistan and wished that democracy may further flourish in the country.
