Pakistan Engineering Council launches Building Energy Code of Pakistan

Islamabad, February 12, 2014 (PPI-OT): Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has developed Building Energy Code of Pakistan in collaboration with ENERCON to bring energy efficiency in buildings. The Energy Provisions shall apply to buildings and building clusters having total connected load of 100 kilo watt or greater.

Addressing to the participants of launching ceremony of the Building Energy Code of Pakistan held in Islamabad, the Minister for Science and Technology, Mr. Zahid Hamid hoped that it would support the designers and the implementing agencies to ensure energy efficiency in the building designs with stand point of comfort, economic and reduced operating cost.

Ministry of Science and Technology fully supports and would facilitate in the implementation of Building Energy Code, especially in the capacity building of implementing organizations, strengthening of testing facilities and trainings of professionals, he added. The establishment of regimes of Energy Auditors and Energy Managers would also provide job opportunities to large number of senior as well as fresh professionals besides generating new business opportunities for the allied industries and thereby boosting economic activities in the country.

Engr Abdul Qadir Shah, Chairman PEC while addressing the audience told that the code would help in saving energy up to 20% in large buildings. Energy Provisions shall apply to buildings and building clusters that have connected load of minimum 100 Kilo Watt, contract demand of minimum 125 KVA, conditioned area of 900m2, and unconditioned buildings of covered area of 1,200m2 or more, he expressed.

Code for medium and small level consumers would also be developed at later stage, he added. PEC in collaboration with ENERCON and Ministry of Housing and Works has designed a comprehensive implementation and capacity building program for effective implementation of the Building Energy Code in building designs, he said.

Federal Minister lauded the collaborative effort of PEC, ENERCON and Ministry of Housing and Works in development of the Building Energy Code. Our nation is facing serious crises of energy shortage. There are multi-directional and multi-sectoral issues connected with this situation apart from social concerns. The continuous increase in the energy demand due to growing population, urbanization and technological advancements asserts for timely actions to plan, develop and manage the resources for futuristic requirements.
