Pakistan Navy celebrated World Ocean Day on June 8

Karachi, June 08, 2013 (PPI-OT): World Ocean Day is celebrated around the world on 8 June every year to highlight the significance of oceans and to promote awareness espacialy for sustainable use of ocean and marine resources. Themes selected this year to promote the spirit of the day is “Together we have the power to protect the ocean”.

Pakistan is blessed with a significant coastline and a large area of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) with abundance of natural living and non living resources. Sadly many of the living resources in Pakistan’s EEZ are endangered due to over exploitation and use of destructive techniques which needs to be curbed for better management and sustainable use of ocean resources.

In order to promote the importance of oceans, Pakistan Navy celebrated World Ocean Day on 8 Jun by arranging a number of awareness raising activities such as beach walk and cleaning at Manora and Sea view, carnival at Maritime Museum and various activities at educational institutes including special children schools such as lectures, quizzes, essay writing and chart making competitions etc.

On World Ocean Day, Pakistan Navy re-affirmed its commitment for the sustainable ocean usage while endeavoring to protect the oceans from various threats and challenges. We are fully committed to play an important role in the global efforts to protect and preserve the oceans, for better tomorrow.
