Pakistan re-elected as member of United Nations Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Islamabad, June 04, 2013 (PPI-OT): Pakistan today was re-elected as member of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) at the twenty-fifth meeting of States Parties of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, in New York. Pakistan’s candidate was Ambassador Anwar Kemal.

He secured 128 votes in a highly competitive election in which there were 16 candidates contesting for 9 seats. Pakistan Mission to the United Nations in New York effectively steered the election campaign.

The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination by its State parties. CERD is the oldest treaty body committee.

Pakistan has a long association with CERD. Former Foreign Minister Mr. Agha Shahi remained a member of the Committee from 1982 until his death in 2006. Ambassador Anwar Kemal replaced Mr. Agha Shahi. His re-election as a member of this Committee indicates the confidence and respect, which Pakistan continues to command in the international community.
