Pakistan Science Foundation, Ministry of Science and Technology and Pink Ribbon Campaign sign deal to promote research on Breast Cancer

Islamabad, February 07, 2013 (PPI-OT): Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Ministry of Science and Technology and Pink Ribbon Campaign (PRC) Pakistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote research on Breast Cancer in Pakistan here on Thursday at a local hotel.

PSF Chairman Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro and PRC Chief Executive Officer Mr. Omer Aftab signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations on the occasion of “National Consultation on Breast Cancer”.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology (S and T) Mir Changez Khan Jamali, Federal Secretary for S and T Mr Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar and other senior officials witnessed the MoU signing ceremony.

According to the MoU, PSF and PRC will work jointly in order to promote research on Breast Cancer in Pakistan, especially in the areas of epidemiology, risk factors and disease management.

PSF and PRC will sensitize and encourage R and D organizations and other stakeholders/donors to seek technical and financial support to conduct research on Breast Cancer. PSF and PRC will team-up to support research through funding and collaboration with related R and D organization working on Breast Cancer.

PSF and PRC will raise awareness against the disease through awareness seminars and lectures at higher educational institutions as well as PSF mobile caravan services around the country depending upon resource availability.

Earlier, addressing the inaugural ceremony of “National Consultation on Breast Cancer” Federal Minister for S and T Mir Changez Khan Jamali spoke at length about government measures to control the breast cancer in the country.

Federal Secretary for S and T Mr. Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar, PRC Chairperson Mrs. Fariba Thomson and PRC CEO Omer Aftab in their addresses spoke on breast cancer prevalence in Pakistan, symptoms of breast cancer, precautionary measures as well as treatment facilities available in the country. They stressed the need for more focus on awareness to control the disease.

PSF Chairman Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro during the Technical Session-I highlighted PSF programs to promote S and T research in the country as well as its different awareness campaigns through seminars, lectures and exhibitions all around the country.

Dr. Riffat Jaffari, Head of Department Nuclear Medicine, Shifa International Hospital, talked on various measures needed to control the deadly disease.
