Pakistan Tanners Association condemns steep rise in power tariff

Karachi, September 18, 2013 (PPI-OT): The Chairman Pakistan Tanners Association (S.Z) Fawad Jawed has severely criticized the steep hike in electricity tariff by KESC which he said would render the export-oriented industry particularly leather industry uncompetitive in global markets since it will contribute to pushup production cost.

In a statement Vice President FPCCI, Gulzar Firoz slammed unjustified increase in rate of electricity charges which he said would cause significant amount of losses to the exporters who have committed and accepted orders to provide leather and its made-ups to foreign customers on rates calculated at earlier electricity charges.

He demanded of government to intervene and order for withdrawal of increased tariff and restore earlier tariff. Usman Umer, PTA (S.Z) Chairman of Electricity Sub-Committee called for devising some arrangement so that KESC should not be able to raise electricity tariff arbitrarily and since the local leather industry is a prominent stakeholder and hence for taking it on board its representative should be included in NEPRA, at least in matters concerning Karachi.
