PM’s Aide Unveils Plan for Climate Taskforce of Volunteers

Islamabad: The Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, announced the establishment of a volunteer climate taskforce aimed at promoting environmental action and combating climate change. This initiative seeks to increase public engagement and foster community involvement in sustainability efforts across the nation.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, Ms. Alam emphasized the pivotal role of volunteers in global climate diplomacy during a meeting with the Young Leaders Society – Pakistan. She noted that volunteers are essential in promoting awareness and supporting initiatives that address pressing climate concerns. Highlighting global trends, she mentioned that over 1 billion people volunteer worldwide, with significant numbers in Asia and the Pacific.

Ms. Alam further reflected on the importance of volunteers from her experiences at the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, where they played a critical role in supporting international delegates. She also cited research showing that popular volunteer activities in Pakistan include environmental projects, healthcare, and community development.

The United Nations Population Fund reports that 64% of Pakistan’s population is under 29, a demographic that Ms. Alam believes can be harnessed for volunteerism despite challenges such as unemployment. In her discussion with the delegation, she urged youth involvement in the climate taskforce and encouraged young leaders to shape a positive narrative for Pakistan, focusing on its green initiatives and low carbon emissions.

The Young Leaders Society pledged their support in organizing volunteer programs and building partnerships to strengthen the taskforce’s impact. They aim to contribute to environmental sustainability and enhance Pakistan’s international image through green initiatives.
