PPI Original Text (PPI-OT) – Accreditation of first ever six medical labs will go on long way to maintain an effective quality assurance

Islamabad, May 10, 2012 (PPI-OT): The Federal Minister for Science and Technology Mir Changiz Khan Jamali has said that the accreditation of first ever six medical labs will go on long way to maintain an effective quality assurance and self accountability.

He was speaking at a ceremony here on Thursday where Pakistan National Accreditation Counsel (PNAC) awarded first ever accreditation to six medical labs of Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in various fields.

Federal Minister Mir Changiz Khan Jamali said that Armed Forces Institute of Pathology has taken lead as a first institute, which has obtained accreditation certificate in various fields.

He said that the importance of medical labs accreditation was increasing day by day in the era of technological advancements and competition particularly in the healthcare service sector.

“It is in the interest of the patients, doctors, the society, donors agencies, NGO’s and the government that the medical laboratories operate at high standards of professional and technical competence,” the minister said, adding that it will provide quality services for the benefit of both patients and doctors.

The Federal Minister said PNAC has already given accreditation to industrial and calibration labs, inspection and certification Bodies and this certificates for medical labs accreditation are the first one and most important for health sector.

“I urged others hospitals and private labs in the country to get their labs accredited as well with PNAC for ensuring safe results, building confidence of the patients who come for various tests,” the minister added.

Pakistan National Accreditation Counsel Director General Anjum Bashir said on the occasion that PNAC had already accredited 51 testing and calibration labs, 2 certifications Bodies and 5 inspection Bodies whereas similar numbers of cases are at various stages of assessment.

He said that these efforts have supported industry, trade, consumer and other stakeholders to be competitive in the World Trade Organization regime.
