PPI Original Text (PPI-OT) – Governor Sindh reviews Karachi Circular Railway revival

Karachi, May 10, 2012 (PPI-OT): Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan on Wednesday claimed that the government would take care of any problems in the revival of Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) on priority basis to provide relief to commuters.

The rehabilitation of the KCR costing over 1.5 billion dollars would be completed with financial assistance of the JICA. The governor, while chairing a high level meeting at the Governor House, stressed the process of starting work on the KCR before June 2013.

There was an urgent need to improve the transport system to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. The governor and the Finance Minister Murad Ali Shah underlined the importance of chalking out a plan to involve the private sector in the project. Dr Ebad also suggested the transfer of central railway station from the congested area of the metropolis, adding that the provincial government would provide cooperation in this regard. The Karachi Port Trust will also come on board in this regard.

The participants were informed that the KCR would be linked with a mass transit system in all areas of the city. The KCR would provide all modern facilities while its stations would work as civic centers, he said.
