Resolution of Kashmir dispute is pivotal for ensuring peace and security in the region: Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry

Islamabad, February 04, 2014 (PPI-OT): In connection with Kashmir Solidarity Day commemorated on February 5, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry held briefings for European Union, P-5 and OIC Ambassadors posted in Islamabad. Referring to the indigenous struggle of the Kashmiris, the Foreign Secretary reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering political, moral and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people. He emphasized that resolution of the Kashmir dispute was pivotal for ensuring peace and security in the region.

Paying tribute to the sacrifices of the Kashmiri people in their struggle for self-determination, the Foreign Secretary stressed that the resolution of this long-standing dispute lay in the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions.

Reminding the Ambassadors that Kashmir was one of the oldest unresolved issues on the UN agenda, the Foreign Secretary highlighted the important role of the international community in helping to bring about a sustainable and lasting solution to this issue.

Appreciating the active interest taken by the United Nations, European Union, European Parliament and the OIC in highlighting the Kashmir issue, the human rights violations and the plight of the Kashmiris, the Foreign Secretary expressed the hope that the international community would continue to remain engaged on this vital issue.

Elaborating on the Kashmir related CBMs, the Foreign Secretary noted that their aim was to reduce the suffering of the Kashmiris, and create an environment conducive to settlement of the dispute. He stated that it was encouraging to observe that despite the pause in the composite dialogue, the CBMs continue which is reflective of the desire by Kashmiris on both sides to engage with each other and interact on a frequent basis.

The Foreign Secretary also stated that while remaining firm on its just stance, Pakistan has always emphasized the necessity of a meaningful and constructive dialogue with India to resolve the Kashmir issue. He stressed the importance of resumption of the dialogue process between Pakistan and India so that all outstanding disputes, including the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir are resolved.
