Srinagar, February 08, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, Indian police arrested the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, on Srinagar airport, today.
Syed Ali Gilani returned from New Delhi, today, to participate in different programmes being organized in connection with the martyrdom anniversaries of prominent martyred liberation leaders, Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru. A spokesman of Syed Ali Gilani’s forum told mediamen that a large contingent of police arrested the veteran leader, took him to his residence and placed him under house arrest. Syed Ali Gilani had gone to New Delhi on January 21 for medical checkup.
Meanwhile, continuing its crackdown, the police, today, arrested Hurriyet leaders, Syed Imtiyaz Hyder, Muhammad Yasin Attai and Bashir Ahmad, lodging them in different police stations. The police have also arrested a number of youth from different parts of the Kashmir Valley.
More than two hundred people including Hurriyet leaders, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Mushtaq-ul-Islam, Zafar Akbar Butt, Bashir Ahmed Butt, Showkat Ahmed Bakhshi, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Shabbir Ahmed Dar, Muhammad Ahsan Untoo, Muhammad Shafi Reshi, and Sheikh Khalid have been arrested during the last three days while Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai and Altaf Ahmed Shah have been placed under house arrest.
Muhammad Maqbool Butt was hanged in New Delhi’s infamous Tihar Jail on February 11, 1984, while Muhammad Afzal Guru was executed in the same jail on February 9, last year. Both the leaders were buried in the premises of the jail and India has not returned their mortal remains to their families yet.
