Tahir Sofi’s family demands probe into his murder

Srinagar, March 31, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the family of a student, Tahir Ahmad Sofi, who was shot dead by Indian troops in Baramulla, last month, has moved an application before the National Human Rights Commission of India seeking independent and impartial probe to bring his killer to justice.

Junaid Ahmad Sofi, brother of Tahir Ahmad Sofi, in a media interview in Srinagar said that the family would also file an appeal with the Human Rights Commission of occupied Kashmir. The family, he said, will leave no stone unturned to see the killers of his brother behind the bars.

“We will also write to Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and UN Human Rights Council. We won’t remain silent. Today our brother was killed, tomorrow it can be any other innocent Kashmiri. The killing of innocent Kashmiris has to end. We have to raise our voice against injustice and oppression,” he said.

Junaid said that his brother was a brilliant student and was preparing for PhD and was killed without any reason.

Tahir, 27, was killed when the troops of 46 Rashtriya Rifles fired upon peaceful protesters in Baramulla town on March 5. His killing sparked massive anti-India demonstrations across the Valley. Fearing that situation might go out of control, the puppet authorities had clamped curfew in major towns and districts of the Valley, and had ordered a magisterial probe.

Additional District Magistrate Baramulla, Manzoor Ahmad Qadri, was appointed as the enquiry officer. So far, at least 16 witnesses have recorded their statements before the enquiry officer, who is likely to submit his report to the Deputy Commissioner Baramulla by the first week of April.
