U.S. Mission Pakistan Starts Publishing Air Quality Data

Islamabad, April 30, 2019 (PPI-OT): U.S. Mission Pakistan, as part of a broader State Department global effort, installed two regulatory-grade air quality monitors at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad. This initiative was done in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and utilizes the best available technology. Real-time publication of air quality data will be available for use by scientists and researchers, the government, and the Pakistani public.

Ambassador Alice Wells, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, cut the ribbon to inaugurate the monitors installed at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad today. At the event, she said the monitors are something the U.S. and Pakistan could use together to fight air pollution. “Air quality monitors are one of many tools on the long journey to mitigating the effects of air pollution and eventually decreasing the amount of pollutants in the air,” Wells stated.

U.S. Mission Pakistan will continue to partner with Pakistan’s Environmental Protection Agency, Ministry for Climate Change, and other institutions on air quality issues to improve Pakistani lives. Data from the new air quality monitors at U.S. Embassy Islamabad is accessible on airnow.gov, on Twitter at @Islamabad_Air, and the U.S. Embassy’s website.

In the near future, air quality monitors will also be installed at the U.S. Consulates in Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar, and the information for those cities will be available via airnow.gov, dedicated Twitter feeds, and on each of the U.S. Consulates’ websites.
