United Nations Public Service Day: 47 public organizations from 28 countries will be awarded with prestigious recognition of excellence in public service on 27 June

Islamabad, June 25, 2013 (PPI-OT): The United Nations Public Service Forum, Public Service Day and Public Service Awards Ceremony will honour Pakistan for its project promoting a better future for all. The global Forum and Awards Ceremony is taking place from 24 to 27 June 2013 in Manama, the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA) is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service. They reward the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide in five categories.

These are Preventing and Combating Corruption in the Public Service, Improving Delivery of Public Services, Fostering Participation in Public Policy-making Decisions through Innovative Mechanisms, Promoting Whole-of-Government Approaches in the Information Age and Promoting Gender-responsive Delivery of Public Services.

Through an annual competition, these awards are aim to discover innovations in governance; reward excellence in the public sector; motivate public servants to further promote innovation; enhance professionalism in the public service; raise the image of public service; enhance trust in government; and collect and disseminate successful practices for possible replication.

This year, 47 public organizations from 28 countries will be awarded with the most prestigious recognition of excellence in public service on 27 June, in commemoration of United Nations Public Service Day, celebrated every year on 23 June. The theme for this year’s global Forum is “Transformative e-Government and Innovation: Creating a Better Future for All”. Pakistan is amongst the 20 winners countries for the 1st place category of the awards.

The winning project this year from Pakistan involves an Initiative on Gender Responsive Labour inspection toolkit (GRLI), presented by the Gender Unit Department of Labour, Punjab.

The Forum and Awards Ceremony are hosted by the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain and organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs Division for Public Administration and Development Management in partnership with UN-WOMEN, UNESCWA and UNIDO, among others.
