Wapda likely to get exempted from hydel power cess

Karachi: The government has decided to exempt the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) from hydro power cess payable to the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) while it also plans to recall an earlier notification sent to Wapda for imposing a charge of PKR 0.5/unit electricity produced from water.

The Council of Common Interests (CCI) had earlier delegated IRSA to charge PKR 0.30 per acre feet of water irrigation and PKR 0.5/per unit on electricity production by Wapda. However, Wapda refused to pay this charge and stated that they are already being charged for water use by Nepra at PKR 0.15/unit while, paying of another charge to ISRA would lead them towards double taxation.
