101 Convicted in Karnataka for 2014 Caste Violence Against Dalits

Bengaluru: A court in Karnataka’s Koppal district has sentenced 101 individuals to life imprisonment for their involvement in an attack that led to the destruction of Dalit community homes.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the court found the defendants guilty of setting fire to Dalit dwellings in Marakumbi village, Gangavathi Taluk, on August 28, 2014. The attack was part of a broader clash stemming from the denial of entry for Dalits into local barber shops and eateries, an event that sparked protests across the state.

The court’s decision follows years of legal proceedings during which, out of the original 117 accused, 16 passed away.
