ADB President Reviews Progress of Benazir Income Support Programme in Taxila

Taxila: During a visit to the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) facilities in Taxila, Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masatsugu Asakawa was briefed on various initiatives aimed at enhancing the welfare of Pakistan’s poorest families through education, health services, and direct financial support.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, President Asakawa, accompanied by an ADB delegation, toured the BISP Tehsil Office in Taxila and the Benazir Nashonuma Centre at Wah General Hospital. BISP Director General Naveed Akbar provided an in-depth presentation on the program’s key initiatives, including Benazir Kafaalat, which offers financial assistance, Taleemi Wazaif, focused on educational grants, Nashonuma for child and maternal health, and an Undergraduate Scholarship Program.

The visit highlighted the operational successes and challenges of BISP, showcasing the critical role of these social protection efforts in reducing poverty and improving quality of life. The ADB President gained insights into how these programs specifically aid in increasing school enrolments and reducing dropout rates, enhancing immunization coverage, and supporting safer childbirth practices.

Director General Akbar emphasized the significant contributions of international partners like the ADB in bolstering Pakistan’s social safety nets. He reiterated BISP’s commitment to expanding its reach and impact, particularly in the areas of healthcare and education, to ensure sustainable development and better futures for the impoverished segments of the society.
